I didn't know this! I bought my American Standard in GC and I fell in love with the neck pickup there, maybe I should consider myself lucky I haven't heard the "better" version.

I'm subscribed in That Pedal Show and one of the presenters has a Tele with a Don Mare pickup in the neck. Do you know if he ships worldwide?

Pretty sure he does, but Dan doesn't use the S-Telly. I think he uses Don's '54. I have seen that he ships internationally.

You should consider the Klein Scooped Mid-Range. I was looking for roughly the same thing as you describe, and I'm very pleased.

Twisted Tele, or any of Fender's other neck pickups, or Tonerider, or DiMarzio, all have nickel silver covers and are priced well.

For jazz, the Dimarzio True Velvet is hard to beat. Even more so with a 4-way switch.

Lollar Royal T. Great clear stratty tone without the typical tele neck pickup murky sound.

That sound is because of brass covers. Just ditch them for nickel silver covers.

Given your description of tone desired I would strongly suggest the over wound Lion King from Cavalier. Very big and b@łłšŷ single coil goodness. Great clean and overdriven! There are a couple of Hendrix tunes on my SC page (signature below) and both use the hotter Lion King. It will pair well will something in the PAF range. Best of all they are inexpensive. Good luck!

If you want the tone of a Strat neck pickup, use a Strat neck pickup.

I know some minor mods to the scratchplate will be required, but that's the most logical solution in my book.

    Twisted Tele.

I've had a lot of pickups in my guitar over the last year or so and the Twisted Tele is the winner.

Second place goes to the Tonerider Vintage Plus.

THe Texas Special neck pickup (which is almost exactly a twisted tele)

My guess you can find one on the cheap

And yes, it is Stratty & can yield exact SRV tones

For the tones you are talking and in particular with the lil 59 duncan in the bridge I would go with a Duncan Hot For Tele neck.
Should give you that fatter smoky SRV and such vibe and also match the output of that lil 59 well. Have a modern player tele with a 59 Custom Hybrid in the bridge and thinking really hard about using that pickup in the neck on mine so--.

I have a Twisted Tele w/ my Little 59. For a covers band or home, it's a great mix in that they cover any base you can think of. They are not well match in terms of output, but I love being able to do the Tele/Strat things with the neck, then step on the Distortion pedal w/ the Little 59.

Joe Barden (JBE) Gatton Neck Pickup.

By far the best I've used in the neck and it's noiseless to boot.

Duncan winds his pups with the opposite polarity as Fender, I believe.

So Duncan tele neck pup won't have a 50/50 chance of being out of phase with the Lil59.

Tele neck pickups have a great bluesy tone.

Those do sound incredible. Mine only lasted about 15 years though so I replaced them with Duncans, the little 59 in fact, with the vintage stack in the neck. The neck on its own is ok, but it really works great together with the 59 in the bridge for a sweet middle position.

Agreed. I have Duff's Guardsman in one of my teles and they are outstanding. Owen is great to work with. I'd contact him and let him know what sound you are looking for. He can wind ANYTHING you want.
