I just picked up a 1960 tweed Gibson ga-6 Lancer. Great tone but it needs a speaker change. Can I get a few suggestions or pointers for buying a period-correct 12" speaker?

Basically a Tweed DeLuxe. Probably came with a Jensen P12R. There's usually some used ones on EBay.
For new, and cheap, an AlNiCo Weber Sig12S. A little more spendy-Weber 12A125A.

I picked up an old alnico speaker probably from an organ that had been reconed by a seller / artisan on ebay. I don't have any experience with Jensen p12r but the speaker sounds great. Maybe this could be a direction you could look into

    There's a 50's Jensen P12P in our classifieds. $65/$15 shipping.

I think Weber Signature 25 S alnico speaker preserves that vintage, early breakup mojo, wih lots of sweetness on top

I'm using a reconed 1960 Jensen P12R with my Fender 5F1 Champ head amp clone.....sounds awesome!!

I do agree with the Weber Sig 12S suggestions.....decent speaker for NOT a lot of $$$.

If you go with the Weber Sig, ask Weber to break it in for you before shipping(it's free).

You stated "period correct". Did you mean actually period correct or period correct by specifications?

The one in the classifieds doesn't have the bell cover.

Does the amp currently have the original speaker? If it does, could it be reconed? Weber could do that for you.

Period correct is only one approach, as there are any number of better speaker choices now then there were then. My '58 GA40 came to me with a no name Eminence ceramic. Have tried any number of different speakers. The R and Q Jensen alnicos are pretty much what you could have found back then, but aren't much to my taste due to early breakup, mushiness in this dark, hot amp. Using a WGS Blackhawk 50 watt alnico now, and that's a whole different deal. An excellent match with this amp ... much more clean now, and you can really hear what the amp is all about.

I meant period correct by specification. The amp currently has the original speaker. I may, in fact, have it re-coned. However, I wanted to get some opinions on replacements so that I could cost it out and figure which way will be most economical and the best for the amp's original tone. It's basically a 5e3 circuit so breakup is what I'm after and staying true to Gibson's original intent is of importance to me. It sounds like the Weber Sig 12S is something I should look into.
