Who has/had the best guitar tone you have ever heard, live or studio?

When and where did you first hear it?

    A guy named Stu Daye.
And I heard it at Max's Kansas City.
I chased that sound for a long time, but I can't even really remember it now.

No way could I pick just one to rule them all. Having said that, the first to really get my attention was the Young brothers on Back In Black. Pete Townshend's live tone on Leeds and Isle Of Wight is another, just about anything Steve Cropper, Keith on Brown Sugar, I could go on all night...

The tone I find myself chasing the most has always been Brad's. But Clapton and Mayer are certainly up there for strat tone, and I've always been a sucker for Slash's tone on the Appetite record.

Tom Scholz and Eddie Van Halen. I was impressed when they first came out, but I had the chance of carefully listen to them again not too long ago, and their sound remains impressive to this day. If I'm not wrong, Scholz is an electronics engineer from MIT who built part of his rig. Van Halen has always had very very good ears.

That's a toss up between David Gilmore and Dan Vickery. The tele tones Dan gets are massive and soooo smooth.

Gilmore has the best midrange tone on the planet, I dunno how he gets it...maybe it's just him but it's it's an incredible sustaining lightly overdriven tone of excellence.

I'm not going to say that this is the best tone I've ever heard. I also like many of the instances mentioned above. But, man, I really, really like this tone. I like most any tone Lanois makes.
