So my wife's birthday is coming up in January and she says she wants a guitar. My plan was to build her one because I thought I could build her a decent one for the same or less then what it would cost to get the tiesco type that she wanted (she likes unique looking guitars). What she really wants I think, is the St Vincent Music Man guitar, but its $1900. We ended up getting some extra cash recently and so she bought herself the J Mascis Squire jazzmaster, which is a decent guitar. So now... She doesn't really need a guitar now. So then what should I get her then? How about something like this

I can't buy it for her but I can sure and try to build one for her!

Got the shape printed out and need to make a template. And these came in the mail today

3 mini hb from china... With the Seymour Duncan logo stamped on the bottom. 4 wires and supposedly alnico 5 magnets. Actually they shipped from Indonesia. I wonder if SD gets pickups made there??? Anyways, I'm looking forward to this build and hoping I can finish it in time. Also have a wilkinson trem on the way.

Interesting. I just did a search and the only pics I could find of the back side of SD Firebird pickups did not have a logo stamped, just a sticker. Would you mind sharing the link to where you bought those?

Love that design on the St. Vincent - very feminine.

    Cheers,
    Rex

Yeah, I know. All the ones I see have the stamp on the cover. Actually the came from Maylasia. I found them on ebay and as they say, the price is right... I figure if they don't sound good then worst case is that I can rewind the pickups. Heres the link

Oh my, that's about what lots of folks charge for the rings alone. Have you taken any measurements with a meter?
Good luck on the build - I'm anxious for a report on those pickups.

    Cheers,
    Rex

Did you get actual blueprints of the St V?
The pic you posted looks more broad and manly, but maybe it's just the perspective.
Great build idea, keep us posted...

No actual blueprints, just what is listed on their site. I took an image from their website and blew up tp full size then traced it in illustrator. It might be the angle that I took the pic from

So the output on all 3 pickups is 7k. As for peak resonance or whatever else... I don't know how to measure that...

Yes, was able to play both. The budget version sounded good but the one I played was not set up well and felt... Well, kinda budget for the $600 price tag or whatever it was. Of course, that could've been due to comparing it to the high end version.

That looks correct. You have a lucky wife! Are you going to make a rosewood neck?

You do have a lucky wife! You also have a helping of good luck (or exquisite judgment) yourself, as she appears to be very easy to shop for! Something tells me that, when birthday comes round, a guitar might not really light up my love's eyes!

Unfortunately rosewood is not in the budget. Probably going to go with some reclaimed wood

Well, she made it easy this year anyways... She enjoys playing guitar but not really into gear. So as long as it turns out pretty and sounds good, I should be alright

I followed your link, and found this set of Artec Mini-hums, they too have the Seymour Duncan logo on the reverse! I don't own any, but have read many favourable reviews of Artec pickups on TDPRI. Hope yours turn out well.

The rest of the stuff minus the knobs and super switch should be coming in a few days.

Quick update: I ordered a bunch of parts from a place here in the states and aparently there must of been some kind of mix up as my package was delivered to some address in a completely different state... So says my tracking number. Not a huge deal as I don't need the parts right now. I did send an email and hopefully will have a resolution this week...

I ordered pickup parts from addiction-fx last year and the stuff ended up in Australia. How does that work for USPS??? I'm in Canada which isn't that far. To their credit I got a replacement shipment right away..
