    Hello there,

I'm new to the forum and recently I was asked by a friend to paint an SG like Eric's iconic Cream guitar. I had quite a few misgivings about taking it on as I'd never done anything like this before. I'm a portrait painter by trade but this was something different. Even though it's not the exact 1964 spec SG like Claptons I still tried to get it as accurate to the original as possible, leaving certain idiosyncrasies as they are and not trying to correct things too much as I have seen on some other replicas of this guitar.

Here are some shots of it near completion and I'll post some in progress shots next. I hope you like it and thanks for looking.

    Mike.

Very Nice. You could get a lot of work from people on this site.

You should check out a picture of Jimmy Pages Dragon Telecaster. I'll bet that a lot of people would love to have a Dragon Telecaster painted up for them. ;)

image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg Hey thank you FenderGyrl, that's much appreciated! I'd not really thought about that too much as I'm a portrait painter by trade as I mentioned. But maybe I'd have another go as it combines my two passions which is great for me!

Here's another couple of photos of the beginning stages, I hope you like these too!

Btw, thanks FenderGyrl for suggesting Jimmy Pages Telecaster. I do know it but I've never really studied it, I'll take a look!

You do nice, clean work. I’ve always thought the Fool guitar is ugly, but that’s not your fault at all. You’re very talented.

I used acrylic paint over two coats of acrylic white primer. I was advised to paint it straight over the original cherry after it had been sanded and keyed-up, which is how the original was painted I think. But I felt that a pure white base coat would help the brilliance of the colours. As a portrait and figure painter I recalled that the pre-raphaelite painters worked in thin glazes of paint over a high white ground and this process enhances the luminosity of the final colours. So this is how I worked on this. I was a bit worried about using acrylics as I've only ever used oils in my work for the last thirty years, so I had to re-adjust to the medium pretty fast. Thanks for the compliment too, I appreciate it!

Haha, that's funny. I've always liked it and I'd always wanted to paint one. I said I'd do it for my friend thinking he wouldn't really go ahead with it. When he went out and bought the guitar I got worried because I hadnt got a clue how to go about it. I tried to get the Angel to work first and to capture the same facial expression as the original. Once I'd got that more or less done I relaxed a bit and the rest followed.

Thanks again to everyone who commented on this, it's very kind!
