Somewhere on YouTube is a sustain test between bolt/glue/neckthrough.

My personal testing for sustain is the length of string beyond the but and saddles that can stretch. String stretches like a spring and is dampened by friction at the but and saddles. Just like a car spring and shock system.

Sustain of headless vs a plinky mandolin that is half string overhang.

all things being equal, I'd rather have an adjustable neck (bolt on) I can always add sustain with a compressor.

A tight bolt on will sustain better than a glued bolt on neck, IMO. Glue doesn't resonate and the bolts pushing the neck into the body will offer the best contact area and coupling IMO. Neck Thru would be the only significant potential improvement in sustain over a good bolt on.

Ever install a neck on a Warmoth? The neck is basically press fit. I have bolt on necks from them that I would consider water tight at the neck heel.

Sooo, we're looking for string beyond the but, less friction on the but, and moderate dampening at the but?

No it is just glued. I have done this a few times now. Works pretty good.
