I've recently acquired another SG, this one came stock with the 490/498 set and I have not got to play it yet.

Any love for these? Or any burning hatred?

I'm not sure what to expect really, I will get to play tonight or tomorrow probably.

I've heard/read that they are pretty unbalanced, are either loved or hated.

I have a JB/Jazz set laying around of need be...

    Thoughts?

I always thought the 498 was fine in the bridge but the 490 in the neck was muddy. I’ve had 2 Gibson’s with 490s in the neck and I replaced them both but that’s just me.

I have contemplated putting a Phat Cat in the neck just because I want a 90 in the neck of one of my guitars...

But I don't want to go tampering with a "virgin" Gibson.

    It's an 03 SG Standard.

    Maybe I will?

I just have reservations about fiddling with it because it's the first Gibson I've owned...

I've owned alot of other high end guitars but never a Gibson until now.

Got it for a price that would make most people pass out... (I almost did)

    .

If one or both of the pickups are muddy, put a 0.047uF cap in series with the pickup hot lead and it will clean it up. The other option is a higher kohm volume pot (higher measured on the tolerance band). The cap is a faster mod.

Good gouge. I'm hoping to install my new tuners tonight and string her up and see what they are all about.

I wanted to remove the really dark sound of the bridge pick up and it worked quite well , plus it has a center indent so you can add/subtract from there.

I have an early 70's SG and I have to say with all the original parts on it ,Im not sure whats in it for pick ups but they are different than the ones in your SG ,I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine

If memory serves.... the 498T was Gibson’s attempt at the JB.

    JT Riboloff designed them.

I have a TBX in one of my Teles, just never heard of or thought of it for humbucker use, but it's a neat idea.

If they even got close I will be in love.

JB is my favorite pickup ever.

I’d first try and make the stock pickups work for you.
Then change the cap as suggested, that can totally change the character of the pickup and it’s cheap easy.
Try a treble bleed, this has been my favorite mod for keeping the muddiness away, it can also fatten up the sound.
You can buy 4-5 different value caps for a buck a piece and resistors for .25 cents each and try out different one and see what you think. Just alligator clip them in to try them out, if you like one, solder it in, Bob’s your uncle.

I have that set in mine. They aren't bad at all. Great for in your face type stuff. They can be used for cleaner stuff but it takes a bit of knob twirling and there are better guitars for that anyway. But give yourself some time with them before you think about yanking them. It took me awhile to really appreciate them

They came stock in my 2005 SG standard. Did nothing for me. On the harsh side, muddy in the neck. I had a pair of Ian Anderson humbuckers from another guitar, put them in the SG. A whole different, much better thing. I can imagine Seth Lovers would be just as tasty.

I bought a used 2016 Standard with that pair. I thought they were OK, especially for overdriven hard rock tones. I wanted a more versatile set so I swapped them out for '57 Classics which suit my needs better.
