Stamps in neck pocket and on neck look like MIJs I've seen before. Is there a date written in pencil on the heel of the neck?

It looked like a MIJ 62 version with a bridge pup rout to me.

Looks like a mid 80s MIJ to me based on the neck markings. The markings search in Google shows a lot of the same guitar. I would not care about the bridge route for that money. Not all 80s MIJ teles have pencil dates.

The neck stamp seems to mean Telecaster Custom '62 Reissue.
Search the 80s Fender Japan Twang catalogs.

He’s giving this guitar to you as payment for set-up including pickups? I’ll gladly do it if you don’t.

Since it's already been routed some. It would be a perfect Andy Summers tribute.

They seem to match up nicely. It looks like a japanese '62-style Tele. Evevn if it's been knocked about a bit, it's a good swap for some setup work. Don't pay for any pickups though, ask the owner to put the originals back in. If he doesn't have them that's his loss.

I'd take the deal, but I really love MIJ Teles.

I have the same MIJ with the same markings but in Candy Apple Red. Love that guitar. That looks like a completely legit TL-62 minus the bridge and humbucker. The MIJ bridge would have a stamped number that starts with an "A" that didn't mean anything anyway. It would have had the 3 threaded saddles just like the AVRI 62 had. Mines the same and from '96. I only know it's a '96 because it has the Fender Anniversary sticker on it. Great guitar, enjoy!

No, the trade deal is for me to buy a set of pickups to put into another Tele the guy owns. It's a MIM that he demolished trying to get a 'roadworn' look.

This is what the guy the tl62 came from wants pickups put into and set up. It was a brand new MIM standard.

    .

Interesting it's white under the black. Unless that's the leveling pore fill material Fender uses.

Guy traded you a clean vintage (routed) 80s MIJ Tele Custom, to buy and install new Duncans in his self relic'd MIM?

    Cool!

If he stops by your house for a visit, don't let him in.
Safer to talk on the porch or even in the driveway.
