IMG_0836.JPG A guy at work wants to trade me this supposed MIJ Tele for setting up and buying/installing a set of pickups in another Tele he owns. I haven't ever seen one of these before, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything lol

Shouldn't there be a serial number on the neck where the 'Made in Japan' decal is?

I'm no expert but it doesn't look legit to me. Maybe I'm wrong, but something about it looks real iffy!

I wasn't sure if it would be there or on the neck heel

The neck looks legit the Made In Japan decal on the heel and the neck plate with the FENDER font is from about 1985/86
The body setup is unusual take the neck off the date will be on the butt of the neck

you would be mad not to do that trade i would do it in a heart beat

So after a close look at it, someone did a shoddy job of routing the guitar for a humbucker, so that part isn't factory. But I have the guitar in town, and will post some more pics when I get home

To be fair it's not like you're doing a few hundred dollars worth of work

Edit: wait, he wants you to pay for the pickups?

Is there a serial number on it anywhere Fordguy?? Front/back of headstock?

A thread from last year http://www.tdpri.com/threads/japanese-tele-no-serial-number.645879/

There's no Fender font on the neckplate. The neckplate in Boil's post is a different guitar.

I own 3 MIJ guitars and have spent a lot of time looking at MIJs in recent years. I've never seen ones that don't have serial numbers below the "Made In Japan" section. But I'm no expert either, and most of my experience is in MIJ guitars made in the past 8 years.

The pictures looks like a TL62B. In years past (before 2000?) there was an additional number appended on the end which indicated the original sale price. So it could be a TL62B-82 for example.

MIJ fenders are the only ones I will buy unseen. I've done so twice, ordering them in from Japan, and have been very happy with both guitars.

No visible serial numbers. I'm on my way home, and will pull the neck as soon as I get there. It also comes with a Fender hard case

This 80s MIJ Tele would have had the serial number on the original bridge which has been removed, the serial would have been prefixed with an A. This is a modded 62 style.

Haha, those first pics are from the guy who had the guitar, but it does look funny.

The guitar is now mine, and other than needing a good setup and new strings, sounds and plays pretty good. I'm actually pretty surprised at the twang the bridge humbucker has. It's different, but I doubt I could have listened to it blindfolded and been able to tell it was a humbucker.
