Next tele is going to be ancient kauri wood. Ordered the slab this morning!
Considering going guardless on this one!
If you've never seen it, check it out at www.ancientwood.com
    This stuff is beautiful!
It is somewhere between cherry and walnut in terms of working it.
Tonewise, I would say it falls somewhere between mahogany and alder.
Not as bright as alder, but not as dark as mahogany.
The finish is spectacular in person. It is almost holographic when you view the piece from different angles and it does not reveal the true look when photographed!
It does take a LOT of sanding prep before finishing, IE, sanding to a 2000 or 2500 gr. before finishing, because every scratch in the wood will show.
This guitar is finished with no stain, no filler, sealed with 4 coats of minwax sanding sealer, and then 6 coats of satin poly.
I've used this stuff for 3 guitars now and I get more impressed every time I use it![IMG]

I've used it many times but I'm not sure I agree with you on your comments regarding tone and workability. Although I have found it to vary greatly from piece to piece so it is what it is for each of us.

After some research, this wood is agathis?
My first guitar was made of agathis. Toneful stuff, but freakin' heavy.

    Yep, Agathis australis.
So you can grab a slab and tell us if 40,000 years of aging makes more tonal difference than a rosewood fretboard...;)

40,000 years of existence isn't necessarily 40,000 years of aging.

Thanks. It was a really cool instrument.

I wouldn't classify any of the Ancient Kauri that I've used as a heavy wood. It's certainly lighter than any mahogany I've used.

Well, agathis is probably like saying pine, could mean cedar, spruce, yellow, white, redwood, just about anything. Also, it was my first guitar, the neck felt thick then. I think it was .66" thick. Could've weighed 2 pounds, just wasn't used to the strap on my shoulder.

Agathis is a genus. Like Acer or Fraxinus or Swietenia.

i'm right there with jkingma on the weight. lighter than mahogany bodies.
That guitar in the pic I posted hovered right around 7-7.5 lbs finished.
Funny how the bodies are always way lighter than the blank that arrives in the fex-ex package. lol 40,000 year old sawdust is HEAVY.

If you guys are ever in NZ, drive 5 hours north of Auckland to Awanui (right by the northern tip of the North Island) and go to the mill. Tele sized blanks are NZD$60 each, and if you ask, they'll take you out the back and let you pick a nice slab to cut from.

But before you go, make sure you walk up the staircase. It really shows just how big a Kauri tree can get.

BTW - you don't have to duck to walk through that gap.
