They've done nothing but play instruments for 40 years and they still suck at it

I'm right there with you on Roy but Gatton genuinely amazes me

I love Beck's phrasing but he generally makes bad records

I’ll admit that I’ve tried harder with Roy Buchanan for some reason. I’ll give Gatton another spin!

OK this might be the fastest “U turn” ever recorded on a thread, but I’ve put on some Gatton stuff and while the more recent things still leave me cold, Unfinished Business is quite impressing me… My Jimmy Bryant side is really open for his Homage to Charlie Christian. So, er, it’s too soon to tell but I might have to amend my post.

I just love how seamlessly the guy will fly between country licks and outright bebop in the space of 30 seconds... it's amazing to me... I don't love the records he made but just his guitar playing is astounding to me

There are so many, most of who's names I've forgotten. Just about anyone who's primarily known for speed and intense technical mastery I just don't care about. I'd rather hear BB King play three perfect notes than Al Demeola play a million useless ones in about the same period of time. There are so many guys out there like Demeola in fusion, in metal, in country, in probably every genre. I just don't have time for that stuff - it doesn't move me and it doesn't even impress me beyond a recognition that they must have worked really hard to be able to do that, but my god, what a waste of time working for all those years. There are technically great players who play with soul and feeling and are more interested in MUSIC than technique and I love some of them, but technique for it's own sake is a waste. I'd rather listen to my own stuff than their's and I suck...

Phish and all the other jam bands. I can't stand self-indulgent 20 minute guitar solos.

Though it's not guitar-oriented, you'll appreciate the "kinda dumb" in 10 Types of Metal. Produced by a metal player who isn't afraid to parody himself and everybody else in the genre. The REALLY interesting part is the comments for the videos. Endless toddlers-in-the-sandbox insult fights about what *real* metal is and how everybody else is an idiot.

Just looked at the comments and... Wow! There are a lot more than the last time I looked. You have to search for Phil Fox to get the real nonsense. There is a quantum space ton of just short crud comments, now.

I love metal, but the fan base (as is evident in the comments of metal videos) is really lacking in intellect, communication skills, and grammar. "The bands I like rule and everybody else sucks."
