I knew it. The cat designs the guitars, and uses John as the shill. See how smug the cat looks...

    (Great pic John!)

That’s amazing! And you might not like the picture, but It has a ton of character to it and I can see why they chose it... Dreaming up your next creation, perhaps :)

    Congrats!

I like the cat. It adds something different to what would otherwise be a very straightforward photo of a dude, his couch and a bunch of guitars. The photographer probably thinks the photo angels smiled on him that day . . .

I’m a lot more old school and prefer my guitars very plain. Having said that, you make beautiful, playable works of art, Mr. Backlund. The world needs more people like you.

That shot is freaking awesome. I understand not liking you picture taken but you, the guitars & the cat make killer piece of art in its own right

Ha, Todd Rundgren on AXS at this very moment playing a beautiful blue Backlund. Song sucks, but the guitar sounds great.

I never said that I was 'waiting for my big break'. I don't even know what that means in this context. There are no 'big breaks' in this sort of thing, a few people buy your guitars now and then, that's about it. l've had no indication that Todd Rundgren using my guitars on last year's tour has sold more guitars than otherwise would have.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm thrilled that he chose those three Backlund guitars for the Utopia tour, and it's great to see them being used that way, but such things are not life-changing events.

And another thing...I explained to the reporter that the Rockerbox semi-Hollow's single-cutaway outline was patterned after the classic Gibson ES175, but in the article, he said it was from the Les Paul. I have no idea where that came from. My wife, who might be able to identify a telecaster from a wheelbarrow, said 'what does it matter, no one will notice the difference anyway?' I explained that guitar players will know the difference!

Oh, well. Other than those two things, I guess it went ok. It is nice to have the opportunity to show this stuff off locally once every couple decades, and I didn't have to go to them to make it happen.

Yeah, the cat ties the subject matter together. The green one on the back of the couch would make a great lap steel or serve double duty.

I've heard that before concerning that model. I could pretty easily morph a lapsteel out of it, maybe even a mandolin.

One stipulation that I made the reporter agree to before I would do an interview, was that I did not want to see the name 'George Jetson' anywhere in the article.

    And it wasn't.

Um, I believe I may have used the Jetsons reference to your designs before. Ahem.

Still, nice to get some recognition for your work and well deserved!

    Cheers,

    I can hear the newsroom.

Cats! It worked for the internet, why not our paper?

Who ever heard of an ES-175? Make it a Les Paul. Everyone knows what a Les Paul is. It's that million dollar guitar.

Now we gotta give it an angle. Local boy makes the big time. I like it.

Many have, don't worry about it. It's understandably unavoidable, because it's often the first thought that enters the minds of those seeing them.

I don't get all 'butt-hurt' about it, but it was nice to be able to have a little control over the reporter's visual interpretation of them without the reference.

I love how it totally looks like you are using the cat as a foot rests in that photo. Sometimes I'll joke around with our cat (who doesn't really share my sense of humor) that I'm going to use her as a pillow, and I lay my head down on her when she is relaxing on the couch. I don't put any pressure on her, just lay my head gently on her, but that's enough for her to huff off indignantly. I assume your cat would be similarly put out if anyone thought you were using your cat as a foot rest. (And to be clear, I know its just the angle of the photo and you're not actually resting your foot on the cat! Just my cat humor cracking myself up.)
