I'm looking at an old amp that has two power tubes, two 12ax7's and a 6AU5.........octal base, small size tube...is that a rectifier or some sort of preamp tube???

It is probably the power tube.
It is a "Beam Power Amplifier", designed for the horizontal scanner in old tube TVs.

The first Ampeg SVTs used a "Beam Power Amplifier", the 6146.
Which was soon changed to the 6550.
This was due to the tubes not being rated for continuous use.
They were blowing up on the Stones' "Gimme Shelter" Tour.

Another application for a "Beam Power Amplifier",
is short duty cycle VHF amplification.
    Think 2 way police/fire radio.
