I'm probably not qualified to answer this myself. There's a lot of his stuff that I've never heard apart from any hits an album may have had. But I will say Harvest and Ragged Glory would definitely be on my list.

I think other projects he's been involved with , CSNY etc, should be allowed as well.

    Cheers,
    Geoff

So far, except for Zuma, I have all these. Maybe somehow I lucked out and got the good stuff.

    No votes for Greendale?

Nice to see ArcWeld mentioned. No I don't have it either, but wish I did. You always need something to play when the in laws come over.

    Cheers,
    Geoff

Here's your "Neil Young - true story" intermission.

Neil thought it was funny how Graham Nash used to rag on him for playing with Crazy Horse - "those guys aren't musicians Neil - that's a garage band !".

So, every time he made a record with the Horse, Neil would play it for Graham and if he hated it or rolled his eyes - Neil would know he'd made a good one.

    Mine :

    On The Beach
    Zuma
    Time Fades Away
    After The Gold Rush
    The new "Live" Bluenotes record

Bonus: I dig Chrome Dreams II and The Dreamin Man live album. Plus you've got to have a copy of southern man (after the gold rush or 4 way st) and thrasher (rust never sleeps) which I think is a relatively unknown masterpiece... don't know why it doesn't get the same airplay as the hits.

Tonight's the night (an album I hated when I first got it but for some odd reason always went back to it.)

Runners up: prairie wind and the second half of Hawks & Doves which he recorded with the international harvesters.

I kind of like him but really to me only Rust Never Sleeps can be called essential. The rest, as they say, is commentary...

If I did a "top five" my list would look exactly like several already posted. So to change it up a little, I took the liberty of ranking my Top 10:

    1. After the Gold Rush
    2. Everybody Knows This is Nowhere
    3. Tonight's the Night (Bruce Berry, RIP)
    4. Harvest
    5. Rust Never Sleeps
    6. Zuma
    7. On the Beach
    8. Comes a Time
    9. Harvest Moon
    10. Sleeps With Angels

Sorry for breaking the rules, but that's my style

    Everybody knows
    Harvest
    Tonight's The Night
Deja Vu (worth it for Country Girl alone)
    Live Rust

I've lost touch with his more recent output though the issue of his older live performances from the 70's are very welcome.
