The good idea fairy came to me a few minutes ago. No one makes 3-48 inserts. I'm an electrical lineman and I can get solid copper wire pieces all day long. My friend has a jeweler's lathe. I can have him drill and tap a piece of copper wire, I can drill and glue it in the body and I have my inserts. Now to work out the details...
Copper will be very soft, so make sure you don't tighten stuff down hard. It will also make the turning a little more difficult because copper is gummy and grabby when machining. Make sure you scuff up the outside well before gluing in the body.
