Julius Caesar got it! 15, March, 44BC.

He did a lot for the Roman Republic, but stepped on too many toes on his way up.

He actually received a message on the way to the senate that he might be killed, but dismissed it by saying, "It is better to die once, than to always live in fear."

Have a good Ides of March. ;)

    'Et tu'

    means 'and you'.

Although I suppose if you're Canadian...

    Thanks for this!
As a Roman I really appreciated it.

A very remarkable guy. Glad, though, that there haven't been too many of them. They can be more trouble than they're worth. Sometimes a lot of people have to die and a republic has to fall, just so they can make the history books.

hmmm... a power-seeking military man who successfully waged many campaigns (wars, we call them) that were not sanctioned by the Republic he ostensibly represented; who invaded that Republic and began a civil war; centralized government and had himself proclaimed "Dictator for Life"; and whose actions ultimately led to the demise of the Republic and the creation of the Empire.

"He did a lot for the Roman Republic, but stepped on too many toes on his way up."

I would probably say he did a lot TO the Republic, and was quite ruthless in his succesful ascent to power.

But hey... we're not supposed to discuss politics here!

Only one was stabbed to death on the steps of the Senate on the Ides of March.

Never make a pretty woman your wife as the song goes. Twas Cleopatra that done him in. Too much time away from Rome.

Yes, Caesar was ruthless, but then again, almost any general or politician was/is.

If you've never heard of it, the Battle of Alesia is the battle which pretty much made ancient Gaul, modern day France, a part of the Roman Empire.

This will take 10 minutes of your time, but if you watch this video, I think you'll have a new understanding of the ancient European world, and why French and Italian are related languages.

Caesar was brilliant here, but so was his foe, Vercingetorix. In the end, I think luck was Caesar's biggest ally.

There were other battles in which Caesar almost got all his troops killed, but that's for another day.

I have to like Julius Caesar; my mother was Italian. ;)

Julius Caesar was guilty of the thing that has brought down more rich, powerful and popular people than any other thing:

He started believing his own press.

Without Vercingetorix we would never have had the Asterix comix :)
