I'm pretty certain that the early Gretsch bass pickups (and the ones you can sometimes find on eBay for $50) were simply guitar pickups with something black under the cover that hid the fact that there were 6 poles instead of 4! (Maybe why they're not rated very well!)

Check this one... Look at the picture of the back... 6 poles!

Likewise, Fender/Squier has also used guitar pickups on low-end basses (i.e.: the Squier Bronco)

Havent seen them. Think I might buy a set of tem as well. :) Always good to have a backup plan for the challenge :)

I actually agree. However, the Gretsch pickups gets mixed reviews. Seems like it depends on what type of instrument you have. On an achtop they sound good. On solid body they fall short. Thats the problem. The tv jones are good all the time. :)

Yeah they do but the ones I posted for Michael are available on his own continent so he has a chance of getting them quickly if he needs them for the Challenge.

But I must admit, I forgot about EY having similar pickups.

Would these count as 'tron style pickups?

Here is my inspiration. In particular gas tank colors. Had one years ago.

Ok... I've paid up, so it looks like this thing's gonna happen!

I had a plan that I was pretty set on for the Open Class... but, a Tele headstock on the instrument I was planning to build would have just looked silly! (I did a mockup... yeah... very silly looking!) I was planning on going forward anyway... because the beauty of a bolt-on neck is that, after the competition, I could just bolt on a neck with the headstock I really wanted to use for that plan.

Then I started thinking... what if I shifted gears and made a Tele-shaped body as well as headstock? Nah! Not very interesting. It's been done before in this application...

But... How about that Cabronita Class? I think maybe I could do something with that...

Then an inspiration struck... Suddenly... Crystal clear in my mind! It would just take some modifications to the pickup...

I don't think I've seen anything quite like this before, on TDPRI... or anywhere else...

Me too but mine was going to be a 5 string open G tuned la cab/toothie hybrid.
I was going to call "Senior Teef."
Oh well back to the drawing board. Maybe something pointier with a Floyd Rose and an HMT Tele headstock. Slap on a Filter'tron and La Cab like the world has never seen or ever wanted to see.

    Update:

My stewmac order arrived today, in a box the size of a Costco birthday cake:

10 days, 13 bucks. Not bad!

A box that size from StewMac? Hmmm, let me guess, you ordered 10 pearl dots and some pick guard screws. :D

Nope, but it was about like that! I had trouble finding my order in all the wadded up packing paper. Still, my order was heavier and bigger than what I ordered from mojotone.

I ordered fret wire from StewMac... Came in a box that size. 2 foot lengths taped diagonally to the bottom of the box!

I think they only have two sizes-big and bigger. They are quite handy for storing bodies. Bodies of incomplete builds that is and pick guard material.
