Thanks to the great advice from members here on TDPRI I ended buying the 83 LP Standard. The pickups are indeed Tim Shaw so that was a pleasant discovery. It's going to my tech tonight for refret/dressing estimate. This week though I was able to install some new tuners (Gibson Deluxe vintage tuners), amber toggle switch tip, installed knob pointers (I do this to all my Gibsons - gives it a classy look) and gave her a deep cleaning to get rid of the grit that had built up over the years. One small issue is I broke one of the plastic screw holes on the truss cover. So ended ordering and installing a Gibson Standard truss cover but prefer the other box font (vintage) and ordered a second one which has yet to arrived.

She's looking pretty now. Thought I'd share some more pics for you all. New tuners and truss cover but as mentioned prefer the other font so a 2nd is on its way:

I love how the body and neck binding has turned a nice amber colour almost matching the natural maple finish.

Here she is with her little brother - a Gibson Classic Player P-90 in Orange Sunrise:

Love that natural finish, and +1 on the original truss rod cover font...

Looks great! Nothing like an early 80s Standard. Mine has become just about my favorite guitar.

Sure thing, man! I love showing it off. :) It's a year older than yours.

Wow, that is gorgeous. I guess you prefer with no guard?

Pure pornography. Just got through posting about the LP (Frampton).

    Gorgeous axe.

It came in with no guard. I've since added one, but it's a slight mismatch with the pickup rings, color-wise. I'm considering getting a full matching set from somewhere.

Did they put three piece tops on them in the early 1980s? Not knocking it, japan was doing that on some of the finer copies back then, too.

    Fantastic guitars!

Mine's got one. A friend who saw it speculated that it might have been a refinish, but I've seen quite a few Bursts from that year with three piece tops.

Gorgeous! Congrats on getting an awesome old guitar back on the road. I bet you can’t wait until the frets are in good order and you really get to give it a workout!

Dropped off my 83 yesterday. Tech says there is barely enough fret wire left to do a decent dressing/leveling which he would've charged $100 with set up. A full refret is $300 with tax so I figure I may as well get the refret done now. Opted for nickel-silver rather than stainless. Should get her back in a few days. I'll post photos before an after.

The early 80's Gibson LP's are amazing guitars.

Congrats on scoring a real beauty.

I have an '80 Gibson "Jimmy Wallace" '58RI LP Standard I bought back in '84
for $500. It came loaded with original Tim Shaw pickups too.

It is one the prized guitar gems in my collection.

    Man, she is a stunner.

There's a YT interview with Tim Shaw where is states the last batch of TS pickups were produced in 84 and the pickup winders were laid off that year as Gibson went back to producing their humbuckers using more "economical" methods.

Got my 83 back from my tech. Jeff did a great job:

Here's what the fretboard looked like before and after the refret. Not enough wire in some areas for a proper dressing so I opted for the refret (pay now or pay later):

    Here she is back home:

The binding all around has turned a nice amber colour:

Vintage Deluxe tuners and period correct truss cover:

I hope it works out for you better than the 1982 Les Paul Custom I had. It was by far the worst workmanship I'd ever seen on a guitar.

My 83 is fantastic. The Tim Shaws are amazing. I think I really lucked out on this one....
