I feel very fortunate. My Father has been playing in bands since the mid 1960s, and a few old amps have stayed around. He bought this pro amp at a local garage sale in the early 1970s for next to nothing. It is one of the first 5E5-A ever produced, VERY low serial number. Tube chart and several caps stamped "EJ" produced in October 1955. Unfortunately , it had been stripped of its tweed, and was covered in white tolex when he got it. It was, with the exception of one filter cap, and a diode instead of selenium rectifier, all original electronically. Original Jensen P-15n speaker is in place. It came into my custodial possession around 15 years ago. It had all manner of pops, buzzes, and crackles when I fired it up. I took it to a very competent amp tech. He replaced the coupling, bias, and cathode bypass caps. A few out of spec resistors were also replaced. I sent the cabinet, to Vintage Amp Restoration (in the Midwest somewhere). They recovered it beautifully, taking great care to preserve the tube chart. It is really fun to fire it up on occasion. I gigged with it a few times, it's really outstanding with a little reverb. It starts to break up nicely around 4 with the eqs set in the middle. It has a treble, bass, presence tone stack. Anyway, I pulled it out of the closet today to measure the tube chart for a TDPRI member making a tweed amp clone. I took a few photos and made a quick demo with iPhone. Thanks, Dad....

Nice amp! Definitely on my wish list. Sure would fit nicely between my 57 Twin RI and Mission 5E3. Enjoy and thanks for sharing!

I know it's blasphemous to say here, but I think I like it best with the stratocaster. It just has a really nice growl.

    Congratulations! A real beauty! Enjoy!

I agree with you -- I really liked it with the Stratocaster, too, though it sounded nice (of course) with all three.

Great amp. I feel blessed to own a 1958 Pro. I gig with it on a regular basis. More than enough power to handle any size pub and great sounding with the channels bridged. It begins to bark, as you said, around four on the vol dial.

Love the bare feet, sweat pants and cushy carpet. Looks like a fun day.
Also, glad you took the time to put it right again

Beauty! I got to play through one once, a glorious experience. I’ve been jonesing for one ever since. The history with your father makes it that much more special. Congrats and enjoy!

That is a beautiful restoration job. I have a repro of a 5E5 with that speaker. Killer tones.
