Thank you Macrogats, I'm still making the easier heel adjust, easy truss rod necks.

Out of the last 5 necks I've tried to make, one I didn't finish before ruining it with the router:eek: plan B was chopping the truss rod back out and starting over.:( A second one took a very slight twist while hanging and I don't want to use it now:oops: (I'm thinking hatchet again). So I'm still learning.

One wormy hole the pencil is in. Was able to put that in the bridge pocket so its gone.

Then cut her out with the bandsaw! Well, A Jig saw with a really thick stiff blade.
Oh and that little saw was unhappy and hot trying to cut this African Mahogany
    but did a good job!

With a nod to Leo and T. Downs, I got to spend some quality time with the new routers and my trusty jig.
It netted me a body that weighs (gulp) 7 plus pounds.
I still got to cut the neck pocket maybe I'll make it to 6.9 LOL.:p:rolleyes::D
I have to tell you, as I clunk this body around the bench it rings like a bell.

This old neck pocket jig is to big so with bondo and a sandwich bag.....

    DSC_0066.JPG DSC_0067.JPG

Pull it, skim it a couple of times with more bondo and a razor blade.

A little sanding cleanup then oh it Fits So Tight and Right!

Happy Halloween to my TDPRI Family!

Amazing I didn't hurt myself sooner.

Trying to drill the holes for wires and the pointy wood by my little finger got me.
If you bleed on them they have more initial mojo right?

Wish the body wasn't quite so heavy.
    Time for the frets

    DSC_0084.JPG

A couple of passes with the nut file and this bone nut just fit with out getting filed. but might be a little low.
The more I look at it the more I want a black nut.

Route cavities in the wings, from the back and cap. Which is exactly what they did to the original thin lines. In your case you could thin the body and route the cavities and put a cap across the back completely or route the wings and cap just those. The second option implies that you also thin the wings to accommodate the caps. You'd still have that one piece top that looks amazing but not all the gravity to go with such a heavy piece.

Thanks Doc, these are good suggestions, I guess there is more routing to be done.
Is there a weight I should be shooting for? If I only make it to the high 5 lbs range its still a porker right?

    Thanks

You're going to love it! I've got a mahogany body that I won from Rockaudio (remember them?) that I built up as a blackguard. It's certainly not as bright as my other Teletype, but it's got some very nice sounds.

I'd say 5lbs is right where you'd want the whole guitar, nice and comfortable. If you can get the body down to4 -4.5 you'll be good. The sad truth is, if it's heavy, it will see less action. I have 12lb+ Tele made of solid purple heart, I hardly ever use it. Beautiful but kind of useless.

    12+!!
    Is it stamped "Norlin"?
The only thing at MY place that weighs that much IS labeled as such.

Thanks for the advice Doc. I appreciate it:).

To get 4 out of that 7+ you might need to saw it in half.:rolleyes:.
I am going to pair it down somehow but am hung up on the 'one piece body' part.
This was supposed to be my first 1 piece.

Doc your right though, its going to need giant chambers to even get close to that mark.

It will appear as 1 piece from the front ;)
Honestly the one piece bodies are best if Spruce, Pine, Fir or really light Alder, Ash or Mahogany. The heavy suckers don't get played, no matter how sweet they sound. I chased the 1 piece thing too. I'm more specific now, looking for the lightest pieces. Try classic tone woods on fleebay, they are in Oregon and the shipping might not be too high for you from them.

Suggestions 1/2 to 3/4 thickness for the chamber walls, thin the inside down so the face is 3/8 to 1/4. Put a 1/4 cap or thinner on the back. The good news is that you could throw a "B"bender in it with little modification.

I bet if I kept sanding I'd find "Norlin" burnt into the center. Funny thing is I have some friends that have been trying to tempt me into selling it because it sounds awesome. I'm just afraid they'd hurt them selves and then sue me.:cool::p

I did a hollowed out Purple heart guitar with a maple cap and that is still over 7lbs.
