Pros: Good tone, challenging to build
Cons: Amp building can be addictive

This do-it-yourself project from the Angela Instruments web site is an envelope-pushing 15 watt Tweed Princeton circuit. The designer recommends using a Fender Deluxe Reverb power transformer, along with a ten or fifteen watt output transformer, for a gonzo 405VDC on the plate of the 6V6 tube. Utilizing a top quality NOS tube is advised. I used a Weber alnico Signature 8” speaker, and it takes the heat easily.

The design delivers strong bass and decent headroom as advertised. I haven’t had much previous experience with Camp/Princeton amps, but I can say it’s a very involving little box, and compares favorably with ones I’ve heard on records. Dynamic is the word for this amp; it goes from warm/clean to assertive crunch with the flick of a guitar pick. This small Tweed is a lot more versatile and agile than its bigger brother Deluxe. It is at its best with vintage-output Strats; my CS ’54-equipped axe never sounded so warm and liquid. Perhaps I’ll stop here with the adjectives.

This was my second amp build (after a Mission 5E3 kit.) Personally, I don’t think Tweed amps make particularly easy projects, with their deep, cramped steel chassis and old-school eyelet boards. Of course, the unobtainable-elsewhere vintage tone makes the effort worthwhile. For more info, and for some good laughs, see the Angela.com site.
