Mean 90s from GuitarFetish are a humbucker-sized P-90 clone that is wound a little hotter than their Dream-90 pickups. The Mean 90 has alnico magnets, and, as opposed to the Dream-90 pickup, which is apparently wound on a standard single-coil pickup bobbin, supposedly has the proper size and shape bobbin for a P-90 pickup (wide and flat).
In terms of playing, they are very responsive to picking dynamics. On the clean channels in my Marshall amps, unless you have a light hand on the pick, you will get some overdrive/distortion whether you want it or not. It's a light blues-y type distortion, but as a result of my picking style, these pickups won't do cleans too well for me. Then again, Marshalls are not really noted for their clean channels, but still, even at low volumes, I still get some OD from the pickups. Really, though, that's not a problem, because to my ear, these pickups are at their very best with anywhere from a little to a lot of OD dialed in. They sound best, IMO, running through a tube preamp rather than a SS preamp (I have both available to me), but either way, they still sound good.
Strat or Tele pickups do not really compare to these, the sound is very different between the P-90 and a Fender single coil. The P-90 is still a single coil, but if you describe a Strat or Tele bridge pup as having a sound like an icepick jamming through your head, these would be like a sharpened jackhammer beating it's way through your skull. Ting of the meatiest, meanest, mad-dog single-coil Tele ever, and multiply that several times over and you'll get the idea of what these sound like. They have plenty of top end to sizzle your eardrums, and a decided twang (not as strong a twang as a Tele, though), but the mids are also strong, and really growl. In the neck position, these pups have a nice round, clear sound, and you will get a distinctive snarl if you dig into the strings even a little.
All in all, based on my experience with them, I'd give them a 10 in a mahogany bodied guitar, like an LP or good LP clone.
