Description: Review by Indiana:

---------------------------------------------------

This is a 1994 DVD of the (British) Nashville guitar man and amazing Telecaster instrumentalist Ray Flacke narrated by Happy Traum. Happy Traum is the stringed instrument master who played with lots of famous 60's and 70's musicians and founded Homespun Videos. Ray Flacke is a stellar professional guitarist but not a professional guitar teacher. However, like all great guitar players he has had enough experience with one-on-one lessons of some type to be comfortable with the format.

Techniques featured include using baby powder and superglue on picking fingers, equipment recommendations, finger stretches, vibrato technique, dynamic left and right hand exercises, and alternate tunings.

The music taught is all Ray Flacke's own tunes, which do include some amazing licks which can be utilized by players in other settings.

Although this DVD teaches techniques at a level of intermediate difficulty, it probably would be most useful to more advanced players who are interested in Ray Flacke's music and see it the possibility of incorporating aspects of Ray's style into their own playing. I can't imagine many beginners having the requisite level of sophistication to put all that together.

Positive aspects include that the licks aren't that hard and it is real hardcore hotrod country Telecaster stuff that everyone is knocked out by, even if they don't listen to country music. Negatives are that Ray Flacke isn't a highly skilled and engaging teacher, and the music featured isn't known to everyone.

Overall, I'm still amazed at people who say they would rather pay cash for one-time personal lessons from amateurs than buy a video that can be watched over-and-over at your leisure for half the price.

I like this DVD and I'm satisfied with the $25 I paid for it at Musician's Friend.com It was delivered right to my door, no hassle.

Here are the electric guitar techniques that will add hot solos and powerful drive to any country or rock band! Ray Flacke teaches the mind-boggling licks that have made him highly sought-after for record dates, jingles and live gigs on the Nashville scene for more than thirty years. 90-MIN. * INCLUDES MUSIC + TAB * EARLY INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

Great Player/Average Teacher, March 15, 2006

Flacke is an excellent hot rod Tele player and you can definitely learn some useful licks/techniques here thanks in no small part to the inclusion of the booklet containing Standard/TAB notation for most of the examples. Thank God Happy Traum was there to pull explanations out of Ray because he does not appear inclined to really break down what he is doing. The first song is in an alternate tuning which means at least 4 out of 5 people who buy the video will never really work that one out. For $10 less you can get "Hot Nashville Guitar" with Steve Travato which is much better. Steve is a monster player AND a real teacher (at USC)and he breaks down licks better than anyone else I have seen to date on video or DVD including Arlen Roth. Travato also has a book with a CD called "Country Solos for Guitar" which is also worth owning if you are an aspiring Danny Gatton, Albert Lee, Brent Mason, Johnny Hiland freak!!

P.S. from Indiana: [NOTE: This DVD features close-ups of the fretting hand on the neck with a picture-in-picture caption style window of the picking hand at the bridge. It is not shot in the over-the-shoulder viewpoint that some more modern videos feature.]
