Sticky Neck
|
|
I received an 05 model 52 AVRI and heres what I found:
Apearance: The finish was done very nicely, although the
body color seems a bit more "Orange" than yellow.
If it's a true butterscotch you want, I suggest a Nocaster.
The construction of the instrument is of high quality.
The neck pocket was tight and no blemishes anywhere on the
instrument.
The neck felt sticky for about 3 weeks, constant playing will make this go away in a short time. It came with 10's from the factory and the setup was done very well.
Sound: The vintage pickups faithfully recreate "classic"
early Tele tone. If I had to pick a song for comparison,
it would be "Mama Tried" by Merle Haggard. That tone
is easier heard than explained. I updated the neck pickup
wiring myself and it was not that difficult.
The neck pickup has the classic "veiled highs" and is not a really high output pickup but it blends well with bridge.
Features: This guitar comes with a nice tweed case with orange crushed velvet lining. I like the case alot. It also comes with case candy, a certificate of authenticity, a bottle of wipe and mist polish and two detailing cloths. They have included another bridge with six saddles if you wish to change it.
I wouldn't recommend it but to each his own.
Instructions for updating the wiring and a capacitor
are included with the easy to follow instructions.
Overall: I'd give it a 9 out of 10 it's very well made and the intonation was done well from the factory as well as the setup. The reason it's not getting a 10 is because
in order to adjust the truss rod, you have to remove the neck. The sticky neck brought the rating down a bit.
The guitar stays in tune fairly well, within reason that is. The tuners are just what you'd expect from vintage kluson type. I'd buy another one if something happened to mine, but I wish they'd offer it in different colors like the copper or black again.
good luck,
Jeff

Nice looking wall hanger

Cons:

Had it 8 weeks and the neck is still sticky, can't play but a few minutes.

This guitar just breaks my heart. Great looking (even with the orange finish) nice sound but I can't play it because the neck is sticky and the finish rolls off in little balls. It's an awful disappoint me to have them ship something that won't play and if you can't play it what good is it? Thus the low rating.
For 1400 bucks it should be OK right out the box.
This model should be tried out on a warm day before even thinking about buying it.
Would I buy one again? New, never! Used, well I'm game. But to buy new and have Fender customer service tell me 'wash your hands' and have people tell me to sand the neck or put another neck on...... well that's a pretty expensive partscaster.

On the AV52, none; on the 60th Limited Edition, the case
|
|
I found nothing about this guitar I can reasonably fault. I own (more than 3) of the clear thinskin 60th Anniversary 'Inlay', which is the AV52 with Nocaster pickups, a clear all nitro finish, and a blingy silver tolex case ( don't buy that case, get a G + G ). These guitars are of very high quality, I've found no difficulty playing any of my nitro necks for extended periods of time, as long as your metabolism is normal and you aren't full of deathgrip anxiety the nitro can withstand the demands on it, and it gets better over time.
Intonates well with 11-49s tuned to 440. You may wish to mod under the control plate to brighten the dark tone, plus convert the tone knob back to a neck pup blender in position #1, like a Nocaster; or you may put in an Oak Grigsby 4 way switch and give yourself neck and bridge parallel and in series, ditch the 'dark' tone, keep the tone control that way. You may wish to bypass the tone control for the neck pickup altogether.
Yes, there's a reason ordinary production guitars are not all nitro as once upon a time. But choose or don't choose nitro based on your own personal interaction with it, not on a relatively small minority who need plastic.

factory setup
|
|
A well made replica of the early telecasters. I found a very light one which resonates well and has a warmer sound then some others I tried.
The factory setup was not good. the nut was not ready to play and caused tuning problems, intonation was way off. I had it setup by the shop so this was no deal breaker. now it's perfect in it's vintage imperfection.
