Bought the Toneport UX2 as I wanted something quick and portable to use as a recording setup with my laptop (Powerbook G4). I saw the toneport info online before it was released and decided to wait for it- it garnered positive reviews and the price was right, so I decided to spring for the 'deluxe' model, as it has a 48v phantom powered mic input.
What it is- USB audio interface. Inputs for guitars (or bass), and XLR inputs for mics. Included software provides the 'front end' interface for the amp models etc.... Models of many popular guitar and bass amps as well as many classic mic preamps. Many effects available also. Software also included for basic multitrack recording, although I am using Garageband on the Mac. setup was fairly effortless (4 me).
Works with Macs and/or PCs out of the box.
I needed something for quick and dirty songwriter demos and this seemed to fit the bill. I wanted something that I could plug in and go without spending a bunch of time setting up and troubleshooting. I was surprised at how well the amp models sound for the most part. Some tweaking is required but it includes dozens of factory presets to get you started, and saving your own custom tones is simple. I am an old school tube amp guy but I found I could get very colse to the sounds I like. Seems to sound less harsh to me than the earlier Line6 products. Effects are generally very good. Having the mic inputs and preamp is a great added bonus.
Would I use it for making a master quality recording?
Probably not, but I could in a pinch.
Does it do everything I need for quick and dirty songwriting and recording?
Yes, and then some.
Edited to add:
I have spent a few weeks with this box and have grown to really appreciate it more. The quality of the effects alone is worth well more than the cost of the unit. Recording guitars now is effortless and people are amazed by the tones.
It has prompted me to write more because it's so much fun to use. Best gear $ I have spent in many years.

Hi, i have the UX1 which has the same software near enough as the previous review so i wont go into details.
I only have one complaint. If you are buying this as a standalone recording package for yourself, IMO get the Guitarport Rifftracker INSTEAD as it comes with a simpler recording program and also with a great drum-machine which helps recordings no end, better than a real one actually, it does what you want it to do!!!
