Guitarists have tended to get all the books. Coffee table book after coffee table book has been glorifying the 6 (and 12) string wonders of our world to the exclusion of the 4 stringers for a little too long. Something had to be done. Now, thanks to Jim Roberts, something has.
Modelled somewhat on Tom Wheeler's excellent American Guitars, American Basses is formatted like an Encyclopedia with makers represented alphabetically from A to Z. Along the way we're treated to some insider's testimonials like Ron Wickersham's (Alembic) explanation of Active Circuitry to Ken Smith's discussion of Wood types.
There's lots to love here and this book definately fills a niche. Because it's the only book of its kind, it's a shame that more of an international focus isn't available (there is a brief overview however of makers like Warwick and Larkin, Ibanez, etc.). However, Canadian makers like Godin are included as American which is okay by me.
Any Bass player who is interested in the Genesis and evolution of their chosen instrument as well as the many innovators that have contributed along the way will find this book a welcome addition to their library. Any 6 stringer who has become such a gear hound that even instruments they don't play are interesting might like this on their shelves too!
Highly Recommended!
