After reading some raves about it here on the board, I picked up the Prince Live at the Aladdin Las Vegas DVD. First off: I haven’t really followed Prince too closely (I don’t have any of his CDs), so I don’t necessarily have the perspective that an avid fan would. Nevertheless, I am disappointed by this DVD. I guess the main problem is the songs: nothing in particular sticks out. The show mainly goes from one fairly ordinary funk song to the next, with far too much time showcasing soloists and not nearly enough time capitalizing on Prince’s charisma to elevate the show to something more than a standard funk revue. Prince’s guitar playing (and singing for that matter) are tasteful, if unremarkable, and while he does manage to hold things together with his effortless showmanship, nothing really catches fire. A mid-concert cover of LedZep’s Whole Lotta Love can only be described as dull (is that possible?).
In his natty suit (with Don Cherry collar, for all you hockey fans), Prince seemed to be essaying some of the funky postures of Morris Day. I couldn’t help thinking how much more exciting the concert would have been if it actually was Morris Day up there.
Most puzzling moment? During one song, Prince invites some of the audience on stage, instructing the bouncers to select people who “look like they need the exercise”. The bouncers dutifully comply, with a selection of mostly overweight dancers.
