I never saw this movie when it was out in theatres and I was going to rent the VHS tape when the DVD came out.
This is a great movie, a terrific concert and hearing it in 5.1 surround is the best. Highly recommed this DVD

found out the band was a little overrated

I was kind of let down. I was expecting some stellar musicianship and to be honest except for Clapton there wasn't much. Levon Helm was very good and in some ways the rest of the Band was good, but Robbie Robertson was the weak link IMHO. Maybe it was just me.

I first saw this movie on the forerunner to HBO in the late 70's at some party. Was able to secure a tape of it later & eventually went through 3 VHS tapes of this. When it came out on DVD last year, I went to Circuit City & asked the clerk if it was out yet, he said yes & did I want anything else. I said "Yes, a DVD player". To say the least, I love this movie!

I own the DVD as well. It is a definite piece of music history. Quality is unbelievable, it was a real treat to be transformed back in time. A must for any collector.

I remember gettin' into this movie from the get go and the reaction by Robbie and Scorcese when it was snubbed by The Acadamy. It didn't even get a nomination...for anything. I don't remember the films, soundtracks, documentaries, etc. that were nominated that year. All I remember is they were total schlock. They definately got robbed.
One thing I've always wondered is...why hasn't all the other material from that night ever been realeased? I've heard rumors of substance effected playing and real bad "jams"...Clapton, Robbie, Neil and Stephen Stills if I'm not mistaken.
I always thought Robbies playin' was pretty hot. Lots of his side-o-the-pick harmonics, his frenetic vibrato and a tone that ripped through the mix pretty well.
Is Robbie playin' a Tweed Bassman? It looks like there's one behind him. I've always been a fan of his, but never really researched his rig.
I've heard there's lots of more tracks from the night. I hope they release them someday. If the playin' is bad, I'd still appreciate it from a historical snapshot POV anyway.
Everytime I watched it, I remembered bein' pretty concerned for Richard Manuel. Sad deal.
Good movie...especially considering a genre where you would think there would be more product from. Concert movies I mean.
Back then all there was, was Yes Songs. Remember that? I thought it sucked.

This was the first DVD I bought for our new player in January.
I can understand some of the criticism about the musicianship but this movie is more of a historical document IMO. So it's hard for me to criticize anything about this movie. Just the fact that it was made is amazing. Yes, Robertson (spelling???) liked to see himself on film but I believe the whole band understood that they were documenting a historic event.
Levon Helm (was) is a monster of a musician, he's the highlight of the film for me.

Pros:
|
The Band
|
|
Cons:
|
The Jam
|
|
Saw it in the theatres as a teenager, owned the album and video, and now on DVD. I'm totally biased; the Band had some weak songs here and there, but the good stuff far outweighed it IMHO. Sad to see Richard so wasted in a few shots, but it's a classic to me.
I found the added 'jam' weak, but that's about the only 'con'.
RIP Richard and Ricky

I didn't enjoy this at all. The guitar playing was spotty at best (including Clapton). The vocals were weak and were not helped any by bringing Neil Young and Bob Dylan up to sing (let them write songs but keep them the hell away from the microphone). The rest of the musicianship was uninspiring as well. The little stories and conversations were as dull could be. I'm glad I didn't buy this - thank goodness for Netflix.
