TeleBass

Hi folks

Just finished playing at the Masonic Home this morning. Had a really good time and got some real blessings from the residents there. One little lady, I don't know how old, actually got up and danced to a couple of songs.

It was the first time I used my new( ? ) bass. I like to call it my telebass. It is a Squier tele body with a Squier Bronco bass neck on it. Just a little careful fitting with a dremel ,some minor other little details like bridge placement, and here it is.

I like having something the factory doesn't build and is kinda unique. I am sure someone has done this before, but anyway, here's my tele.

That's sweet! I bet it's fun to have that short scale, too - some guys around here really like the bronco. What pickup did you use?

Oh, and welcome to the TDPRI

Thanks David

Right now it has the stock squier pick ups in it. Sounds suprisingly good once I put flatwounds on it. I will in the future put a Basslines S/D SCPB -3 in the neck postion. I have used that pick up before and like the sound out of it. I'm thinking of leaving the bridge pick up as is, because of the good bite on the high strings.

Hmmmm....I have a Squier Musicmaster neck just sitting here....

How does it balance, any neck dive problems?

Cheers, Tim

Hey! That's my Tele!!! ....actually I'm telling the truth I play in the band with Tim3finger. Last week we were brain storming (we are both telefreeks) and somehow came up with the idea to install the Bronco neck to the Tele Body. Out came the tools and off came the neck and I gave the body to Tim...stock...electronics and all, just cause I wanted to see how it worked out. Don't change a thing!!! Really, It's sounds better than the $,$$$ Gibson Tim had. And looks WAY cooler...Tims gots a keeper for sure!!! BTW, that body and it's electronics are stock...all Tim did was cut the back edge off the bridge plate and screw it back on, then add the Bronco bridge. I've never heard a bass sparkle like this one. I told him that if he showed you'all on the forums...and a few more of you'all make em...he might have started something that could really catch on.

Tim

The bass balances very well. It naturally settles a little above horizontal. Not as tiring as a lot of basses I've played. I am guessing it weighs about 7 1/2 lbs. Not bad at all.

I have plenty of room on the headstick to shape it more or less like a real Tele headstock, but I just don't want to quit playing it long enough to do that. Besides, have you ever had something ( anything ) that was just right, then you changed something and poof, it wasn't right anymore? That's kinda what this bass feels and sounds like. Juuuust Right!

I can not remember exactly, but do an eBay search for short scale bass, at the bottom of the listings, there are suppliers of short scale strings.

You can also do what I have done in the past, just buy some Fender flats
( .095 ) and use those. Low E gets a little fat on the post, but the A-D-G strings work out pretty good.

I would think that if you started shaving wood off the headstock you might upset that nice balance it has. Sounds like you've got the right idea to leave it as it is.

Oh, and welcome!

Thank You

You are probably right, changing the headstock shape might change the balance. I do like it the way it is.

I think that's just the grooviest lookin' creation!!!

How hard was it to calculate where the bridge was to be installed? And do I understand correctly that you are using the original Telecaster pickups?

The scale is 30" on this bass. Measured from the nut to the center of travel on the saddles, called it good and tweaked in the intonation from that starting point.
Well, the original " Squier Telecaster" pick-ups. Probably a big difference if this were a Geetar, but since its a bass, probably not a big difference.
