Favourite tones to use in Worship music!
Currently I'm loving the tone Brian Setzer gets in his live performance of Mystery Train. It's so spanky!
What are your favourite tones that you try to emulate or even aspire to, when you're playing live? Examples? Show us your cool tones. Just as an example. This is the heaviest guitar tone I've come across in a worship setting. Pretty crazy how they can get away with this! Drop D riffing FTW! Planetshakers - Get Up |

The vibe I have in mind of late is basically Andy Timmons' "Resolution"
I first heard that at the Boogie website. Also, thanks to this track I've been using a stereo Univibe, set to a fast Leslie - ie quite evident buy only used briefly (half bar to a bar duration) to delineate changes between sections. But a Tim boosted with a red snapper is a thing of beauty. |

I've been listening to a lot of Jake Hamilton. The last few weeks I have been allowed to get outside of the box a bit, and have been incorporating a style similar to what Marc Ford (Jake's lead guitar) plays in "You" on at least one song each week.
Fun times! |

For worship tones the most common sound is very U2ish. I'm a huge Eric Clapton fan though, so I try to through in some bluesy leads. When I'm using the Tele, I go for a Keith Richards kinda thing.

My board is set up for versatility but I basically want Buddy Miller (country), Daniel Lanois (ambient, U2, Emmylou Harris, etc) and Indie rock (Death cab, telekinesis, Decembrists)

I'm running a Blues Jr and have an SM-57 in front of it. I run a Boss ME-33 multi-effects and a Route 66 direct into it. Tones are pretty much fairly clean, with as little grit when I dig in. I use a bit of chorus. Sorry, I like big lush guitar sounds; but it's not so wet that it gets lost in the mix. Think basically Brent Mason tele tones on most recordings that are Pop-Country. I use overdrive and try to have a soulful tone on solos.
I like my Modern Country tone and will use that tone whenever I can. The worship leader likes it and it goes nicely with our songs.

I use a Fender Strat with the middle and bridge pick- ups in play. I run through a Boss Chorus - TC Nova Delay (dotted 8th) - Hardwire RV-7 Reverb. I have a Verbzilla set on the octo for a light shimmer if needed. I also use the grip side of blue Herdlem picks to achieve the U2 sound that my Worship Leader likes ( I admit I like it as well). We go directly into a Line In. My job is to accompany the acoustic guitar.

The truth is that the pedals and settings I use are never the same from week to week. The only constant is reverb and that changes settings week to week depending on the sound I go for.

I play at a cowboy church so obviously we do a lot of country stuff. I like to go for a Marty Stuart and the fabulous superlatives ( Kenny Vaughn) sound. Which is a good thing since I play a tele with keystone pups into a silver face Princeton NONREVERB. We do play a good bit of p&w also though and for that I usually just try to emulate what was on the record.

I've been trying for the past little while to get a Brad Paisley-ish sort of tone for church. I think I've come up with a close approximation of that with my Tele, MXR Custom Comp, OCD, Modtone Analog Delay and a touch of reverb on my HRDlx.
I could probably get closer if I had a Z Wreck and Z Verb but my wife tells me it's out of the question now. :( |
