My experience....
with the SoCal TDPRI and ClarenceWhiteForum guys has been excellent. Great players you know (Bob Warford, Greg V from this list) and many you don't. You never know how many "church players" are lurking among our fellows here.....and I have found markedly less "attitude" with Tele players for some reason.

Start your own jam...
For the past year, we've been having a Musician's Fellowship, at our church (Calvary Chapel). We meet once a month, on a Saturday; we start with a few worship songs, have a short devotion, and then we spend some time with prayer requests. After that's done... we jam for a couple of hours!
We get to use the main sanctuary, and the head sound guy gets everything up & running for us. We usually have a handful of singers show up, along with a couple each of drummers, bassists, and guitarists. We play Christian stuff, with an occasional blues/funk instrumental thrown in for good measure. We have a blast, and for most of us that attend, it's the high point of our month! I did a similar thing a couple of years ago; a friend & I used to get together and play P&W songs on Tuesday nights, in his garage. Word got around, and it became an informal jam; some nights just he & I, some nights a bunch of folks would show up... we always got blessed!! I think there's a lot of Christian players that want to jam, it's like in Field of Dreams... If you build it, they will come!! |

went to a secular jam today...
I play at two local jam sessions (Bluegrass, C & W, & Southern Gospel) & I get more out of listening & playing that music then I do listening to this contemporary music at my church.
At one of my jams alot of my Southern Gospel is too slow for them as is my old Country & Western. Banjo players have this mentality that everything has to be fast or it can't be played. Marvelous 2000 Nashville Telecaster 1966 Gretsch Jet Firebird |

Recently I attended a Pedal Steel guitar jam!
Its was amazing. At least 25 guitars in a semi circle were there. What a variety of vintage pedal steels, amps, styles and ages. Got me thinking about buying one... anyone else here play a pedal steel?

Hmmm... secular jams... whenever I go to one (which isnt often.. i guess i dont jam much.. ) I usually show people lines n licks from alternative Christian music (metal, alternative, rock, hardcore) w/e and they start asking about it- I would teach em the riff or whatever and tell em to go look up that band..
and sometimes that's all it takes.. Just a foot in the door.. Just gotta plant that mustard seed :D Just now realizing... this post is pretty old.. lol.. |

I own a 1956 National 8 string and a 1947 Supro 6 string. I used to spend time on them but haven't in years. After the Back2Blues Fest last weekend I've decided to "try" to put more effort into playing my guitars and that will include the lap steels.
