As someone trying to play more bass, I take offence at the idea of being 'bumped up' to guitar.

Our setlist for this Sunday:

Evermore - G (Hillsong)
Arms Open Wide - D (Hillsong)
One Thing Remains - B Flat (Bethel)
Holding Nothing Back - A (Hughes/Smith, arr. Jesus Culture) for baptisms, first service only
Our God - A (Hughes, Tomlin et all) for offering
You Are My Rock - G (Hillsong London) as special piece at end of sermon

Four-piece band (bass, drums, keys and me on telecaster and lead vox) plus two additional singers. Looking forward to it, especially the baptisms in the first service. We have up to 12 people being dunked so it will end up being an extended version of the song!

lol, bass is fun and all since I can fake it pretty easy, but I find playing lead much more challenging for what out music pastor asks. with bass i just play the base note and then toss in some 5ths and octaves and it usually turns out okay.

Same way I "play" bass , which you're right, is good enough in a pinch.

But seriously, this is the perhaps the equivalent of a "lead guitarist" picking notes from only major and minor triads the whole time and calling it "leads" . Like a good lead player, a good bass player has quite a bit more repertoire than the basics, and I definitely appreciate the skill required to really hold the bottom end.

This Sunday's list:

Hosanna (Paul Baloche)
Our God (Tomlin)
Rooftops (Jesus Culture)
Holy Spirit (Bryan and Katie Torwalt)
Let It Rain
Mighty River (Katinas)

How did the flats work out for you?

Do you guys who play at church all know how to sight read or do you have a chance to learn the songs before hand?

My sight reading illiteracy is what keeps me from volunteering to play at my church

I play by ear and have lots of notice to learn songs beforehand - see this recent thread for various opinions and experiences!

When you say sight read, do you mean standard treble clef notation or just chord charts?

We get the chord charts and a CD of the songs 7 days before Thursday evening rehearsal and 10 days before the Sunday service. We are expected to have the songs worked up according to our role (e.g. lead, rhythm, acoustic rhythm, etc.). These days, there is minimal need for traditional sight reading. I have been given a new song in rehearsal and/or asked to change keys, but nothing more daunting beyond that.

I realize that I am lucky and in a minority in that we have a professional sound team and worship leaders who have high expectations and keep it well organized.
