I'm not going, but my wife & I went to one a few years ago and had a good time. The Hans Ives (elec. guitar) & Norm Stockton (bass) workshops were the high points for us. If you can, sneak up to Riverside and check out Wild West Guitars... lots of cool stuff there:

Thanks for the info, Nub. I would definitely like to check out Wild West Guitars. The details on the conference seem to be really non-detailed. What do the electric guitar workshops entail? Are they interactive? I'm planning on taking a Tele with me. Are there amps to use while there? Any details from anyone who's been would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

At the conference I went to, everyone just played unplugged, and there were a lot of folks who didn't even bring instruments. I took two guitar workshops; one was with a guitarist who had just finished touring with Jeremy Camp (I don't remember his name), and his workshop was kind of a drag... all talking & no playing. The second one was the Hans Ives workshop, and it was fantastic; he's the worship leader at Harvest w/Greg Laurie, plays a Tele, has an impressive pedalboard, and he spent the whole time showing how to get different tones out of our guitars & giving tips on leading worship on electric guitar. He & his killer band also gave a concert on the second night.
The details for the conference do seem pretty sketchy... at the one I went to, we were told ahead of time what the workshops would be, and then told of any changes once we got there. Maybe they've found that it's just easier to give out the info once you're there, but that sure makes it hard to plan. |

It was alot of fun. We heard some awesome teaching and some pretty bad teaching. I went to some ok workshops and a couple of great ones. We made some new friends that we've stayed in touch with via the magic of Facebook. I kept hearing these little remarks here and there from some of the teachers and I learned that apparently we worship leaders are supposed to be at odds with our pastors. I guess my pastor and I never got the memo. Praise the Lord! Ha! I came away with some new practical ideas, a few new amazing songs to incorporate, and a better perspective of my job as a worship leader. I also discovered Danny Donnely and the Monday Night Band CD. If you don't have it, buy it. Finally some worship music that speaks to me. More than anything I came back with a deeper appreciation to the Lord for our congregation and especially for my pastor for all of the things we are and are not.
Oh and Nub, Wild West Guitars was AWESOME! We were not expecting that, especially not the jungle club. |

Yea, Wild West is kinda trippy...the polar opposite of Guitar Center. Dark, quiet. Almost lonely. The Jungle Club is so strange.
Far from the Maddening Crowd. Lots of great guitars...plus there are one of only two Dr. Z dealers in so. Cal. The Guitar Tech, Mark, is an awesome setup guy and phenomenal player. I knew Greg Laurie when he was just getting started. Nice guy. I just never got into the Evangelical thing. |
