the brother i'm playing music with these days has written some excellent lyrics for the old stevie nicks song "leather and lace". i'll ask him if it's alright to share them with you.
here's some lyrics for the 1st verse of SRV's pride and joy that just came to me one day: you've heard about love given sight to the blind my Lord's love makes the sun to shine. He's the great and mighty King, He's my pride and joy He's the great and mighty King i'm His little errand boy... if you come up with more verses, please share them, cause that's all i got.

I find it much more satisfying to keep the original melody of hymns and change the arrangement up. You'd be surprised at what you can come up with, but it takes a lot of effort and tastefulness to do it right.

I'm with Ridge runner and Saxguitar on the "House of the Rising Sun" tune to the "Amazing Grace" lyrics. Very bluesy, and fun.
BTW, I've noticed that the lyrics of "Amazing Grace" fit almost any tune you care to try. Two other versions I've done involve the theme to Gilligan's Island and the Eagles' "Take It Easy." (Neither of which are versions I'd expect to hear in the lineup of a worship service, but they are fun.

Thunderbyrd, that’s good. I guess great minds travel the same path.
You’ve heard about love giving sight to the blind My Savior’s love causes the sun to shine... He’s the Messiah and King He’s my pride and joy He’s the Messiah and King I’m His little chosen goy* I love my Savior heart and soul I know His love will never grow cold… I love my Savior, He’s tried and true What He’s done for me He’ll do for you… My Savior’s love is like the finest wine He’ll stick with me through the end of time… * For those not hip to the Hebrew, goy in Biblical terminology meant “nation,” but in Modern Hebrew and Yiddish goy has been used for centuries to refer to a Gentile. (The masculine plural ending –im on the Hebrew word goy, i.e., goyim, of course refers to Gentiles, plural.) So my rendering of the last line of the refrain works for me since I am a Gentile believer in Y’shua. BTW, SRV’s “Pride and Joy” is a staple in my repertoire, and one of my wife’s favorites. She says she likes it because I really punch it out when I’m singing it. I think she likes it because of the line “Love my baby, she’s long and lean…” (My wife’s the embodiment of that line; she’s six feet tall and slender and shapely and…uh, what was I talking about?

It's not exactly a rock n roll melody (more like a folk-rock tune), but for decades I've done the Mote/Bradbury (words/music) hymn "My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less" to the tune of Paul Simon's "Sounds of Silence."

BTW, House of the Rising Sun also works well with O Little Town of Bethlehem. Though, again, it will not be on our Sunday morning set list (ever). |
