Check out Rev. Gary Davis or Blind Willie Johnson for authentic acoustic gospel blues. Jorma Kaukonen of Hot Tuna has also recorded quite a bit of Davis' material for more contemporary versions. You can hear them all on:

www.last.fm, pandora or jango.

Some songs that I have done acoustically in church include:

"John the Revelator"
"Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning"

Glenn Kaiser is a great blues interpreter (what was that album with D. Mansfield?), not at all what you'd expect from the founder of Rez Band. My band also does "John the Revelator" to good effect.

Dave, I think you may be referring to "Trimmed & Burnin", an all acoustic blues set and quite tasty also.

There was also "Slow Burn" as well as some great live stuff with Glenn Kaiser, Larry Howard, and Darrell Mansfield on a cd called Blues Night. They are all well worth buying.

+1 on the Kaiser, Mansfield, Howard, Blind Willie, Rev. Gary choices....

Also check out Mississippi Fred McDowell...some GREAT acoustic sprituals...Son House too....Blind Boys from Alabama....so many to choose from.

On the Kaier/Mansfield/Howard live CD "The Blues Night" Tace Balin just kills with a version of "When I get to Heaven" with Rob Glickman playin' dobro slide...

Also "At The Table of The Lord" and "Everyday Will Be Sunday" from Mansfield's "Blues With a Feeling" CD. Great acoustic stuff!

Check out the cold mountain sountrack. It's T Bone Burnett and Jack White (but it's not the white stripes, it's deep and sincere and worthwhile, I promise). Some stuff will take your breath away.

+1 for son house and blind willie johnson, and also check out some of the last johnny cash stuff you may find something.

Good suggestions all! I often go to the old traditional spirituals. They are often blues oriented. "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" is a good example. You can also swing it. There are others.

One of my favorites is R.L. Burnside's "Wish I Was In Heaven Sitting Down".

And the whole "B.B. King Sings Spirituals" CD.
