evil guitars?

Just a question that popped into my head.

What kind of guitar is totally unsuitable for a church band and why?

Would a Dean Razorback be out of the question? Perhaps a BC Rich Warlock?

IMO, and it's kind of funny, but I wouldn't play guitars wuith skulls and stuff on them. I don't have a problem with skulls and such but it's just not what I would do.

Now there are brands I wouldn't buy or take into a service. Schecter is the main one. everything about their website is so dark and gothic. Especially their "Hellraiser" model...

I dunno, unless the guitar has something offensive on it, I don't think it matters. As for Schecter, eh, not my bag, but I think I once read of a guy that used one, and covered up the hellraiser logo with tape, or something. Same with some pedal that had sort of a stupid name, just covered it up.

Now, you may look a little silly playing a Razorback at worship, but hey, if that is your thing...

Not a church player here, but I have been to church (and I stayed at a Holiday Inn last nite ) ...

Do you wear your tattered jeans and death metal t-shirt to church? Then I wouldn't play a guitar that could potentially be construed as disrespectful or inappropriate in church, either.

Objects do not posess evil...images may be offensive but I don't see them being evil. appropriateness is the ??? or some could say those are evil chords your playing...some people even think any electric guitars in church are evil or that a certain beat is evil I just don't buy it. I play twice a week at church. I do wear my beatles T-shirt tho on teen night

Cheers

It's nice to see religion take on the really important issues. Frankly, I play a Huss and Dalton...I know I'm saved.

I used to have a red SG that I took to Praise Band practice a couple of times, and I got some dirty looks from one of the female singers. I asked her what was wrong, and she said, "That Red, Satan horns guitar of yours!" She was half joking. I said, "What El Diablo here?!" She didn't laugh, and I got rid of the SG. Not because of her, but because it never was comfortable to play, and, at 6'3", 260, I looked like I was playing a ukelele!! LOL

In my opinion I think musicians shouldn't play instruments in this setting that draw attention to themselves. Imagine the piano player wanting to install one of those keyboard mirrors to show off their playing style.

I play my Reverend Rocco Swirl at church. No one mentions anything about the name but they love the swirl.

I think it depends on the church. At the church I grew up in (and my family still attends), the pastors daughter and son-in-law are both tattooed and pierced and wear ripped jeans and stuff, so it's not a big deal. The crowd there varies greatly it goes from metalheads with dyed mohawks to the older crowd in suit and tie every Sunday. Personally, I don't think God would mind what we wear to church or what guitar we play there.

I agree that the instruments really should distract from the whole worship experience. At first I kind of felt uncomfortable playing my acoustic at church as it's bright "surfburst" blue, but I didn't get any negative reactions or comments from anyone. I am planning on getting another acoustic though, mainly as my Ovation is made to be plugged in and is kind of dull and muffled unplugged, and one that draws less attention...

This reminds me of one worship service I went to where the lead guitarist was playing a candy apple red Ibanez with a hot pink pickguard. As if the guitar wasn't distracting enough, the whole time he was just up there shredding the whole time and I was VERY distracted from the actual worship

You know, it's funny...

When I was about 12, I saw a Christian rock band in a magazine and was so surprised that the guitar player rocked a Gibson SG. I thought the double cutaways looked like devil horns...I thought he was being sacrilegious. lol

Well, since telerasta didn't say what church we are talking about, it is hard to put limits or offer suggestions. Example: Product 26's guitar would fit in if one were playing for/attending a Church of Satan service, but it doesn't really fit in with a Christian church setting, does it? Unless, of course, the Christian preacher is a real 'hellfire and brimstone' kind of guy and wanted the guitar there for 'negative' effect. Maybe the instrument could be rigged to catch fire and burn to bits at the end of the sermon? LOL

If you look at it - the guitar, the clothes, the set list etc - and think "Is this going to be a problem?" then it's inappropriate.

This applies equally to any situation where you are not the focus of attention.
