i'm really into this stuff and wanted to ask you guys what's the last Christian album you bought cuz mine was Canton Jones's Kingdom Business CD. i've been searching for new songs on his myspace.com/kingdombusiness08 page and rite now my favorite on there is Hater Day. so inspiring and his love for god is undeniable.

the last I bought was Newsboys latest, but my favorites (and you should check them out) would be anything by Phil Keaggy, Jeni Varnedeau, Jacob's Trouble (80's stuff) or a band called Anavox (look for them on MySpace)
I'm with you there's nothing better than listening to christian music sung by someone who loves God completely! I hope that someday someone describes my band MOTEL EARTH that way... |

Nope,KingsX dosen't count!
Doug and I spent hours talking about this very subject when I was living at his house in TX because I was struggling with my faith at the time. You know they used to back up Phil Keaggy and Ty wanted to carry the Christian theme into kings X but thats it.Neither Doug or Jerry are really religious.Especially Doug though Doug was groomed to be a preacher as a youngster. He left that all behind, especially when he came "out of the closet".BTW,I'm STILL struggling with my faith and personal truth. Anyway,Stryper was my last Christian album! |

Pretty much the only music I listen to is christian music... and not on purpose. It also happens that most of the music/ my favorite bands are people that I know and have hung out with hahaha. Maybe So Long Forgotten's cd if Itunes counts. The last cd I recieved was when I got The unreleased winter sessions of The Tide. We don't call ourselves a Christian band, but we exemplify Christ in our lyrics and our actions so I guess the last Christian cd I helped pay 450 dollars for was my own hahaha.

It was either NewWorldSon's "Salvation Station" or Mike Farris' "Salvation in Lights". Before that it was David Crowder's "Remedy". Someone on my worship team burned me a copy of Delirious' "Kingdom of Comfort", so I'll be purchasing that one soon - if it's worth listening to it's worth buying my book.
Truth be told I haven't browsed the racks of my Christian bookstore in a LONG time. A lot of it is just the same old rehashing of the same old stuff. Ever since the major labels took it over there's a lot of fluff to get through to find the real meat. IMHO at least. |

What is a "Christian album"?
Seriously, does that mean all proceeds go to some good cause or the musicians spend a lot of time helping the sick and poor? What makes an album "Christian"? I have been wondering about this stuff for a while as this seems to be a pretty big market. I have a hard time figuring out where the "Christian" angle is coming in. |

Christians that are in music full time have bills too------you just can't give all your money away. Encouraging others in their faith is vital,I need it myself....but it is a business and an industry, and you can't reinvent the wheel;sometimes I fear that the tail is wagging the dog.

Same industry different "wrapper". That's kind of what it seemed to me too. I can't see where that would have anything to do with Christianity though. |

Last Christian album?
I think I bought either:
Marty Stuart's Souls chapel or Randy Travis's Glory Train Both are amazing albums with Incredible guitar playing. -------------------------------------------------------------------- What is a Christian album? basically Christians singing about Jesus. Or instrumentals that allow you to journey or reflect on your faith. Its about the music and lyrics. The packaging & business end is something that just has to be done. That was a very STRANGE question for someone who's on the "Worship Service Players" ? Or ...its exactly the opposite of Death Metal.

If I have to put a definition to "Christian Music" (and I hate it when I have to) it usually means an artist on a label that can only be found in a Christian Book Store or in the "Gospel", "Christian" or "Worship" sections of a larger music store. Bands like Switchfoot, U2, POD, Relient K, MXPX and the like are not what I'd consider "Christian" bands, though the message of their music is often overtly Christ-centered. The same would hold for folks like Marty Stuart, Randy Travis, Danny Flowers and others who may make a gospel album of sorts, but their bread and butter is in the mainstream.

Before that it was Skilllet's "Comatose" (Great CD) Before that it was Chris Tomlin's "Live in Austin Texas" (Awesome CD)

To the Original Question - Either Randy Stonehill's "Edge of the World" or Johnny Cash's "The Man Comes Around". :)
Quote:
"Any music that God uses to glorify Himself" - hmmm, that is pretty broad. "Music that is used by People to Glorify God through Christ" - it doesn't have to mention God or Christ explicitly, but it should be apparent that it does. I'd say some Van Morrison music hits this target, but others may disagree. An old friend of mine once said that if it didn't come from a "Christian" publishing house, it wasn't Christian. She had a tough time explaining why that applied when Amy Grant went to A&M but kept singing about God. We could probably all come up with a nuanced version of a definition, but they would be as diverse as if you asked what makes a "Country album" or a "Rock album". What I consider to be Christian will differ from what others here think, same as my definition of country is different. Take it as a rough category; no need to be legalistic about it. I remember Greg Volz(Petra-mid80s) asking "When did a record ever get saved?" Records and songs don't get saved, so they aren't Christian in the sense that people are. And just because something is marketed, doesn't mean that God is not in it. God works through my (secular) employer to pay me so I can feed my family and (hopefully) be about His work. |

The word Christian is only in the bible about 3 times, and everytime it's used as a noun.......instead of a subtitle or adjective.
"Christian" music is written by believers to glorify God, and uplift/encourage other believers. It can be subtle, talking about real life issues,or praise and worship. The topics and themes of songs will place them within a certain genre---for example, gangsta rap is deemed so because of it's thug-like image and lyrical slant, not the style.

I can hardly get myself to listen to most "Christian" pop music any more. I is just so weak and egocentric. I will listen to straight worship music, specifically with lyrics that glorify the One. I have come to really, intensely dislike worhip music that is all about "my experience". There, I said it... whew...
