Returning to the fold
Hi there,
Resuming the guitar after more than 20 years playing other instruments. My first guitar was a butterscotch Japanese telecaster, now long gone, so a telecaster is what I'm going to choose to get things rolling again. Just love them. Presently considering the Squier Classic Vibe, Fender Modern Player and the Mexican Standard. Hard to make a decision as I keep switching preferences. I have rather large hands so is there one model which would suit a returning player over another? Great forum here and appreciate any feedback.

Hello.
All those models are OK, but if you can it's best to pick one out individually by trying it out, if you can. There are small variations in weight and feel between individual instruments and out of 3 seemingly identical guitars on a shop wall you sometimes find that you like one more than the other 2. But if you don't live near a shop with a selection and have to order one in, I'd go for a MIM Standard. They tend to be consistently good, especially after a good setup (they only get a cursory setting up at the factory compared to the more expensive US models). |

Hi Homeside and welcome. I started off wanting the CV and went in to try one. It was pretty good, but I thought I'd try the MIM Standard, and then a basic Squier Affinity Butterscotch Tele. I really wanted the CV, but the cheaper Squier just felt really good. I ended up paying $275 and getting the cheaper Squier. Nothing wrong with the CV and the MIM, and I surprised myself, but I really love the Affinity. Your experience may be different, but it's worth getting your hands on a few models before you buy IMO.

Down to the individual. From previous discussions here, there really doesn't seem to be any firm connection concerning the size of your hands and the size of the neck, as in, big hands don't necessarily prefer big necks and vice versa.
The MIM Standard has a sort of medium-full neck I think. It isn't skinny, anyway...so it shouldn't feel cramped. Only one way to find out.... |

Yeah, the MIM is very sweet for sure, but love the feel of the CV and the Modern Player Thinline just oozes cool. Wish I could buy them all.

I had the same exact problem. Couldn't make my mind up at all. With money being a little tight for me, I decided to go with the Affinity and I couldn't be happier!! I could not believe the quality of this guitar for the money. I was a bit concerned about the thinner neck but after playing it, I love it !! The action is sweet and fast. I was really super impressed. Also the intonation was very good right out of box. You can't go wrong for the money. Just my humble opinion. But you wont be disappointed with a Squier no matter what model you decide to go with. Vic |

![]() Boy, what a player, but what gives with the short neck? Not so much confused any more, just spoilt for choice.
