New guy from Buenos Aires, Argentina
Hello, people of the tdpri. You don't know me, but I know you all very well since I've been reading this forum a lot. In fact, that's what made me realise that it wasn't fair to continue reading without registering at least and contributing a little bit to, with what I can.
I excuse myself if I write goofy English, or if anything sounds awkward, but I wasn't born speaking the language. I can, nonetheless, understand it very very well, so don't hesitate in talking to me! My name is Germán (I know it's a bit odd in English, but it translates as something like Germain), I'm from Buenos Aires, almost as southern as a major city can be. I'm 24 and play guitar in an irregular fashion since I was a very little boy. I kept playing more regularly as time went on until our days. I started with classic rock and moved on to soul, R&B, blues (and a bit of funky music too). Nowadays I'm dabbling in jazz (I'm starting to play), classical jazz for the moment, but I still have plenty of love for the styles I've been playing all these years. I'm not a pro, and although I had (and have) my semi-pro moments which I really enjoy, playing guitar is not a job to me. Besides the styles I play I'm also constantly lending an ears to new stuff. No need to say I love teles and the Fender approach of course... I'm going to try to post when I really feel I have something to add until I start feeling comfortable in the forum. I'm really glad to have the privilege of joining this great community! PS: Wow, that looks like a huge piece of text above! |

Thanks for all the welcoming posts. I was never much into forums before, so all this seems new to me!
@BG: Yeah going the hollow jazz-box route is easy (except they're usually pricy) because the jazzy tone is right there, but I always feel like I'm giving something back to Leo Fender when I play (or try to play) jazz in one of his guitars, because of the "failure" of the jazzmaster with jazzplayers! If think SolidbdyJazzfan gets it too because of his nickname. @joaopazguitar: I always wondered how to translate my name to other languages so it doesn't sound so strange. The latin languages usually have an equivalent, but for English for instance I'm kind of lost. What would the most common name in English that could translate as "Germán" be? @Tonemonkey: I see you catched one of our women! A lot of people usually say they are the among finest available (I wouldn't know because I've never been abroad). So what part of Argentina are you visiting? I don't know you much, but I'll sure be glad to be of any help if I can! (by the way I really dig Marcus Aurelius, as in quote) |

So you're starting a new company, great!
Of course if at anytime along the way you come up with a question about something about life here, I'm at your service. Or if you ever need a junior industrial engineer, once again, I'll be glad to talk to you. You know, jam sessions at work would to send productivity through the roof ;) |

Oh, and a quick piece of advice, buy all the teles, guitars and amps you can before coming, because most gear here is expensive compared to USA or Europe. (Usualy like 1.5 to 2 times the US street price, mostly thanks to a zealous customs office and imports politics)

I don't get what you say trev333... I like fender guitars a lot, if that's what you mean. If it's about a pun on the nickname, well yeah, there was a day in which I realized what the word "fender" meant, and it seemed funny that it was also somebody's surname.
The Castilian word for "fender" is "guardabarros" which literally is "mudguard" (guarda=guard and barro=mud). I pictured all fender guitars with "mudguard" written on the headstock and it made me and some friends laugh. Maybe someday if I build a tele I could put "mudguard" or "guardabarros" on the headstock. I was thinking about all this silly stuff when I signed up. |

Maybe it's a southern hemisphere thing...
I had no idea Oz stands for Australia, and I still don't know why it does. Now I'll have something to start a conversation when we watch the Three Nations this year... Actually the Four Nations now ;) |

Why is it that I'm supposed to know that song? I actually never heard it. (and now that I have, I don't like it much).
The thing about the Fender surname is that it's sounds too modern. I don't know when was it that surnames were assigned to people, but it has to be more that 200 years ago at least. I know maybe horse pulled carts have fenders on them, but anyway it sound like car related, like I never heard about a Johnny Muffler. I wouldn't beleive it if somebody tells me his name is Bill Optoisolator. Yet we have Freddy and Leo Fender. Beisdes, wasn't he supposed to be from Greek descent? |
