Very Late Bloomer
Hello, my name is Raymond, and I just discovered this site. What a a great place to go! I plan on joining and engaging in forums from now on. Pics of gear to come. I'm 50 and taught myself around age 13, but after a decades-long lapse of not playing regularly I, as a former Gibson man to the death, has come around to Fender, especially the history and culture surrounding the Telecaster; it simply fascinates me. I just purchased an '00 Squier and a 50 watt solid-state 12" combo Crate, also just as old.
My first major hurdle in teaching myself to set up my own axe is string buzz. When I get the intonation dialed in with a tuner, there is still buzz on the neck from the nut to the 5th or 6th frets on the G and B strings-even after setting the action as high as I dare. I'm afraid to say it, but I believe the neck needs to be tweaked. I have the right tools, a little knowledge and alot of willingness. Should I attempt it, or take it to GC and let them deal with it? P.S. Also, I plan on changing out the stock pickups with hotter ones. Do this before or after the adjustments? |

Welcome aboard! This room is full of do it yourselfers and real pros, so you'll find the information you need to go it alone, or the support to take it to a luthier/tech. Me, I'd dive right in, you can always refret or replace the neck!

Your neck may be fine but check it anyway frett the first and last frets on the guitar and check the height of the bottom of the string on the 8th frett it should be around .o10" if it is a 9.5 radius neck. I also think that it could be your nut is cut to low and is causing the buzzing if your neck is staight and it is still doing this it is the nut....

Welcome from another new comer.
I am in a similar boat. I am 45, been playing since 2nd grade (with several years off to raise kids), but just entering the Telecaster Realm. As my signature says, I'm hoping to turn all these parts into a Telecaster!

Another welcome to all you new guys from yet another newbie. My favorite approach, FWIW... we have a talented local luthier, and I'll take him stuff just for the chance to pick his brain while in his shop. Learning a lot that way & gaining confidence to try more DIY repair/setups.
