New Tele and question
I came home this past weekend with a new Joe Strummer tele. I just love the feel and sound and I am way past caring what it looks like - It was just a great fit for me. My first Fender was (and still is) and F-35 acoustic which my mother bought me 34 years ago: this is my second one - it has been a long but worthwhile wait.
Anyway, my question - I am getting a little buzz, seems to be from the neck pup - and the buzz/hum which fades as I ground or contact the guitar elsewhere. Is this a 'tele thing' which I shall grow to love and appreciate, or a minor electronics glitch to have checked out (I am in no way a techie myself)? Any help or advise much appreciated. Cheers

Welcome to the forum MPatt!
Your hum could be completely normal. 60 cycle hum is the nature of the beast of single coil pickups. If it is 60 cycle hum, you should be able to hear it change as you move the guitar around in relation to the amp while you're not grounding it. The grounding thing when you touch the metal on the guitar is normal as well. Theres lots of good threads on adding shielding to help cut down on the hum, and since you now have a Tele, you may as well dive in and have some fun!!!!!!

Much appreciated - I guess I'll be forced to spend hours and hours playing, trying various settings, and working on finding out the intricacies of my new guitar.........oh, well.....somebody has got to do it ;)
Cheers

Well, could be wiring, but more likely 60 cycle hum. Basically, hum generated from single coils...You said it "fades" when you move it elsewhere (the guitar itself)? Well, oddly enough, single coils are not only responsive to picking but VERY responsive to electrical fields, :p. When anything electric is ON and around you, the single coils pick it up. Go near a computer, and you will see a huge amount of hum. Go into say a dark room (like a closet) with no electricity (turn the light off) and it will ultimately go away. This is because off "Electric Air Pockets"...Yep, electrical air pockets that literally float around that are generated from electric powered "objects"...If you have a very "twangy" tele, it MAY be more suseptible to this.
So, on that note, probably an airpocket, or just even a bad sauder job. |
