Welcome to the forum Smagol! It's not to everyone's taste, but the important thing is that you like it. For the record, I don't mind it either.

Welcome to the forum and this post may be better received in the finely finished portion of the forum. As you now know be careful what you ask because people will be honest

it looks ok but it did look better before and you have decreased its value bit like having a showroom car then hitting it with a hammer

I feel sorry for that Telecaster. But your looking for an answer. So get yourself some muriatic acid. Grab a tub that has a lid. pour a bit of the acid in the tub,put the parts in a smaller tub, set the smaller tub in the big tub and put the lid back on. The "Iron" plate and other parts will be rusted

I know he "asked" but that doesn't give you a license to be rude. Come on guys. I'd hate to see what happens when your wife asks "do these pants make my butt look big?"

Jeez!

The politically correct term is "socially challenged".

A little unusual but I like it. How did you age the pickguard?

There are a few different ways to age the metal parts, depending on now far you want to go with it. You can scuff them up a bit with steel wool or something to get them less shiny. Some people will get some muriatic acid and suspend the metal parts in a bucket or something-- NOT dip it in the acid, but hang it over the acid for a while. A little goes a long way.

Good luck with it; from what I've seen, it's really hard to get a tele with a modern urethane finish to "age" realistically...

A guy who makes toupees has said that the reason they tend to look so cheap and ridiculous, is that the person who buys wants to get his money's worth. The result is too much fake hair that looks like a cap. In his view, the more successful toupees were those worn by Bing Crosby, and, to a lesser extent, Sinatra. Bing, especially, still allowed thinning hair to dominate.

I feel similarly about the raw wood beneath the finish. I don't ever remember seeing much of that back in the day. Sure, there was a tendency for an old guitar to be headed in that direction, but it was more of a hint than an obvious sanding/removing the finish. Since a newer guitar that is reliced already raises suspicion about its authenticity, I think you should go more in the direction of _not_ removing finish. The discerning viewer will think, nah, it must be real, because why didn't the guy get rid of the finish more obviously? Less is more, big-time. I think the metal looks great. It is just those two spots.

i had a drummer who decided to relic the cymbals of an old drum set of his. we all lived in a band house together... and he decided he would do it while i was on vacation. i came home to find muriatic acid all over my living room floor... an awful smell permeating the entire house... and everything metal in the living room had rusted. the wall outlets were oxidized so badly they barely worked... the door hinges creeked and resisted... and the latches on my guitar case were almost fused shut...

moral of the story: use that muriatic acid outside!
