Hats Off To Roy

I always loved Roy Buchanan's playing and tone, so one day I decided I'd try and see if I could approach it. This is my home made Tele through a Silverface Bassman, modded with an Allen Amps Old Flame board. The reverb is also from the amp. No FX.

Granted, I am not Roy and I didn't try to copy any of his tunes. I just went for the style and tried to have fun in the spirit of his techniques and styles.

That was the best Roy clip I have heard besides the real Roy of course.

Outstanding job couldnt have been better.

Just more proof you dont need a 53 Tele or Special pickups to get the Roy sounds its gotta come from inside the person playing and you my friend whoever you are have the Roy spirit burning deep inside your soul.

Mark--You just put a big smile on my face with your kind comments. Yeah, NOBODY does Roy like Roy did and I will never even dream about filling those shoes--but I sure love his playing and did what I could to capture some of his vibe.

Thanks also for the welcome. This is a magnificent site for Tele fanatics--the best I've ever seen. Lots of knowledge and info here--even for an old Tele player like me. I love the instrument and the variety of players who use it. Got my first in 65 and have had a love affair with the Tele since then. I have played Roys second album the orange one almost everyday since 1972-3 whenever it came out thats album in my mind is the benchmark for true Tele tones.

Im an old fart too 55 and love Roy B.

Roys 'Second Album' is definitely killer. Its my favorite overall. His tone on that one is just perfect, IMO. Quintessential Roy. "Messiah' from the first album is pretty magnificent too. Maybe you gotta be a Tele player to fully appreciate him, but when I saw that PBS special he did years ago, I knew I had to get some of his music.

The one album I've always wanted to hear was the live album from Japan that was not released here in the US. Ever heard that one?

I havent heard that one. Watch for Bob Davis to add to the thread he is a friend no relation that loves Roy too he has a huge collection of Roy.

I like all Roys stuff but like the early stuff the most the first 3 on Polydor. Roy Buchanan black cover the 2nd orange cover and Live Stock.

Great job! I've been a Roy fan since the first album. Saw him play about 4 times. You really did capture the Roy feel and phrasing. Enjoyed the tune alot.

On the amp you are using, what made you decide to replace the SF Bassman board? Also, how did you decide on an Allen Old Flame as the replacement? I seem to recall that the Old Flame is more Super Reverb inspired. I'm curious about doing some similar mods to a Bassman head someday, and your idea might be one I would try.

I agree with Mark.......that's about as close to Roys' style as I've heard on this forum in a long time. Our new member Crawdad has definately been listening to the "right" Roy Buchanan LPs. Your definately on the right track!!
Also, it's nice to see that you don't really need an original '53 Telecaster, or any $300.00 special-made pickups to capture Roys' spirit and style. It's all in the fingers and the heart!!!

Also Mark, I'm shocked you've never heard Roys' Live in Japan LP from '77. A year or so ago it was finally available in this country on CD. In the past you had to go searchin' for a vinyl copy of that record.Anyway, I have an extra CD copy of that record which I'm going to send to you Mark.......enjoy!!

Thanks everyone! Its great to find some others who appreciate Roy Buchanan. I certainly like a lot of players, but every now and then I have to get of fix of his stuff. I'll be checkin' out clips here. I know there's some killer players.

Sydneystreet. I bought the SF Bassman to learn to build tube amps. One day David Allen said he had an Old Flame board he'd sell me, as I'd also put together one of those kits--so I went for it. I don't know if that is something he'd routinely offer, but he had a populated board he wasn't using at the time.

I think we can all agree that there will never be another Roy Buchanan, but you definetly hit the nail on the head on that song.

What I like about this clip is he captured that sorta saxophone sound Roy got. In his style all the notes are pretty much played & bent around till they sound right for a lack of a better description.

Play the clip at a high vol it really captures Roys soul.

I have to admit that I'm actually not that familiar with Roy B, hes tone, or his tunes.

With that in mind, I can make a comment without any preconceived references.

Irregardless of tone of amp or guitar or, color of your socks...I thought that was a great, meaningful solo. I really enjoyed it!

Thanks to all--you are way, way too kind. For those of you who haven't heard Roy, you need to hear the real deal and not my parroting. Start with Roy Buchanan's Second Album or "Sweet Dreams"--The Roy Buchanan Anthology on Rhino.

I don't have any CD's at this time.

"The Messiah Will Come Again" is one of those pieces of music that has a powerful impact every time I hear it--and its been out for over 30 years. Get it!
