15 yr. old girl rips it up on a Tele

Sadie Johnson sitting in with my band . Sadie is garnering attention statewide for being a young Blues player. I first met her when she was 13 and getting started, it's been neat to watch her develop and grow as a guitarist. This past Christmas morning I got a text from Sadie @ 6:45 a.m. saying " Dude , I got a Tele ! " First person outside of her family she told. Give her a listen , keep your eye out for her in a few years...

How did she get started? How did her parent's nurture her and not force her? I ask because I hope my future kids will go into music but I don't want to pressure them.

Her dad is an audiophile. As he tells it he just had music playing all the time , Allmans , BB , SRV, Beatles etc...Sadie became infatuated with the sound of guitar and wanted to know how they did that. They bought her the first guitar at 8 yrs old not a play guitar but a mid priced Samick with full scale neck and got her lessons. Like all children she was hit or miss for a few years then round 11 she started to think about playing as a career option.

She really got the bug @ 13 as has progressed nicely.

This is very true,,about 35 years ago my youngest son was 7 years old and expressed a desire to learn steel guitar.I bought him an MSA 10 string,3 pedal
with 2 knee levers.Got him started with very prominent teacher in music store
that I delt with.He started out fine but,,,I pushed him to hard. When the other kids were outside playing,,I forced him to practice, practice, practice.
I myself ruined it for him.I knew kids need time to play and just goof off some.
I didn't allow for that.I'll be sorry for that till I die.GIVE THEM BREATHING ROOM. PS,,,I still have the mini thumb and finger picks. They are sssooo cute.

I was just thinking that Uggs don't seem to be the most "bluesy" shoes, then I thought, neither are my sneakers - oh well.

That's cool, don't see very many young kids interested in the blues, let alone girls.

She's rockin' it. Wow, good job!!

My kids grew up around bands....my bands usually practiced at my house! As much as they learned to love and appreciate live music, they never cared one spit about playing it. My daughter joined HS band, and played trombone, but really never learned a thing.

To this day they love music, and go to as many concerts as they can, and so on. They were too young to come see their dad play until later in life....they got to see me play a few times, and last job I did was playing my oldest daughter's 30th Birthday.

She can even Jazz it up some:

It's called The Sad Sam Blues Jam , but the kids are havin' some fun with it.

She has a bunch of videos posted of her playing, just search "Sadie Johnson" in the search bar on YouTube.

I'm 14 and my dad plays music too. I was actually the one who wanted to start it. just don't force it just give them the option of doing it and try to get them to start it and encourage, but not force them to practice. oh, and try to keep them from listening to rap

Just expose them, and if it's meant to be, it will be. I'm blessed in that my son is a musician. At his schools spring concert he played the cello, double bass, piano and alto sax. He also has a rock band where he plays drums. Don't push it, but there's nothing wrong with a nudge once in a while!

I really enjoy Sadie's playing and it is great she has an activity she likes.

But.... I'm a father of a nineteen year old musician and I've spent the last eight years up close with an endless stream of great young musicians who are going to make it some day. So far two have, Joy Williams and James Durbin. I always think we should just let these kids be kids who are playing and enjoying "today". Just let Sadie the guitar player be the guitar player, not the thirteen year old who is good for her age.
