Seeking your comments on this new surf original

My surf band, the Royal Aces, would certainly welcome any comments from Telecaster Nation regarding our new original, "The Spy". For our upcoming album, we are purposely aiming for a raw, low-tech, basement party sound, and we are hoping that this song captures that feel.

Thanks for any input, positive or critical... it's in the list of songs on our site at www.myspace.com/theroyalaces.

Guitar info

Thanks, Mr. Martin!
For that song I used a fine Rob DiStefano assembled Strat with Fender '69 custom shop pickups, through a Music Man 1x12 amp that has a Jensen Neo (super lightweight) speaker in it.

Lordy lordy, I do love surf, and this works well for that classic surf i iv v sound. I like the reverb (are you using a tank or a pedal?), the whammy dips, and the tremolo picking. Nice job.

I listened to some of the other songs on your site, and I like them as well - they're spare in a nice way.

Have you listened to the surf guitar 101 podcast, and in particular the Eleki one? I think there are some great ideas there for screaming, pick-melting surf.

Here's the link for their podcasts, Brah. http://www.surfguitar101.com/modules.php?name=Podcast

Sounds great, but beef up the rhythm section. To often bands get obsessed with great lead (which that song has) and vocals and neglect the importance of fat and energetic rhythm section. I'll let Sandy Nelson and The Ventures explain what I mean.

Sandy Nelson - Teenbeat

The Ventures - Live in Japan

I mean this in a good way, BTW...
If "raw" is what you're after, I think you found it And if that's how you hear it, that's very cool.
Surf's up with the Royal Aces!!

Thanks everyone...and a note for Henry

I really appreciate you folks taking time to listen and give comments.
Also, to Henry: I was born here in Denver, and am back here now, but I did all of my growing up in and around Ithaca (I lived right on East Shore Drive right along the lake).

About the reverb...

Forgot to answer the question about the reverb - I'm using a Fender reissue reverb unit that is turned up relatively high, but not all the way (I don't like the reverb to be so high that it gets "clanky")...

I knew with that surf tone that you must have lived somewhere where you could watch the sun set over the water. I have a friend who lives on East Shore drive, right along the lake...best place I've yet been to for a gin and tonic, fire works, and sunset.

Life on the lake

You're right, Henry. I was a kid swimming in the lake, thinking about how great "Walk, Don't Run" sounded, and dreaming about playing guitar. And now here I am, maaaany years later, and still loving reverb and twang!

I loves some surfmusic! You guys have a great authentic tone and production. Surf music is tough to play well and keep interesting throughout, I think you guys do it well. The bass did sound a little buried, but that is probably just my little computer speakers.

Sounds great! The song could be mixed a bit better though, seems like the bass is kinda buried. I really like your guitar work.
