No Train to Memphis
We took a last-minute gig this past weekend as a favor to our booking agent. Ordinarily an unpromoted, sparsely attended affair in a dumpy place on the outskirts of civilization would be a job to quickly forget about. But, every once in a while, the cast of characters in a bar are just loony enough to make it a fun night. This place had a BIG surplus of "characters", and we captured a few of them on the video (but there were several more off-camera too).
Ladies and Gentlemen, yes there are some twangy guitar bits and a nice steel solo, but I bid you to check out... Dancing Guy - This guy had the most bizarre dance moves I've ever seen. It was all we could do to keep on playing and try not to stare. Watch him take it up a notch at about 1:30 into the song. Buxom Gal - Sometimes you look for inspiration, sometimes you find more inspiration than you could ever hope for! She was quite "talented" and loved to dance. I would have played for free that night. Harmonica Dude - Thankfully he played quietly off to the side most of the night and didn't ask to come up and "jam". He couldn't help but stop mid-dance and play a little solo to himself at about 2:05 in. All in all, a night to remember! |

What an awesome band. I'd have a blast there. Dancing guy was actually pretty darn good. I'd like to be able to do that. He just totally loses himself in the music. Buxom girl....I'd like to do that too.

Unless drinks are $1.50, I am glad I live in neither Ok nor Il. That guy wasn't dancing, he was practicing the martial art of Mid-Western Kung-Fu.

Thanks, gents. I'm the on the left, playing my trusty partcaster, my buddy on the right plays a G&L - we both use Deluxe Reverbs (unmic'd in this instance). I occasionally hack away on a mandolin or dobro as well. With better lighting you'd see our fashion choices (though tastefully chic and exquisitely refined) consist of a black shirt and jeans.
The song is originally by BR5-49, off their Tangled In the Pines CD. |

Great performance! I love BR5-49 (or I guess BR549, now) and just about any upbeat, old school sounding country, and that song in particular is one of my faves from them. Thanks for sharing the video. You guys sound awesome!

There is a verse to a John Prine song that I never understood. I think I do now.

Thanks, all. That song is always fun to play. Not many people are familiar with it, but everyone seems to enjoy it. I think it's the choo-choo beat that hooks 'em!
