Lap Steel and Tele boogie
I had fun recording one of my favorite steel guitar tunes tonight. This is where my shortcomings as bassist and suitcase drummer are most evident.
Anyway, this a tune Buddy Emmons did with Little Jimmy Dickens called "Buddy's Boogie". It's one of the hottest tunes ever recorded and Buddy played it on a pedal steel in the 50s. I adapted it where I needed. Clinesmith lap steel, Fender Telecaster Deluxe with miniHB in neck and Fred Stuart Blackguard bridge, Michael Dunn Rhythm Futur guitar, Kay upright bass, American Tourister suitcase drums. Electric guitars played through a Fender Princeton Reverb Buddy's Boogie Thanks for listening! Last edited by Neer; June 30th, 2009 at 12:39 PM. |

This is awesome! Great playing on both the guitar and steel.
Do you mind if I ask what tuning(s) you use on your steel? I'm a big fan of this kind of playing... I used to play steel myself a while back, doing kind of retro-traditional country type stuff on a double-8 Stringmaster. The recording sounds great too... that's really just a suitcase? I imagine you're playing on it with brushes... can you give some details about how you did it (including how you mic'd / recorded it)? |

Hey man, thanks. Yeah, that's just an American Tourister suitcase with some paper taped to it. I asked a friend of mine for a snare and stand, but he forgot to bring an extra for me at our gig. I basically play with brushes and try to get the mic into a good position where I won't hit it and it has good sound.
The tuning here is E9--E B G# F# D B G# E. I play numerous other tunings, but in this case I wanted to play in what the original was in. Of course, Buddy had pedals on his old Sho-Bud. All of the instruments were recorded with an SM57 either aimed at the amp or the instrument. I use Reaper as my software. That's about it. |

I just saw the Clinesmith page. These steel guitars are beautiful... I had no idea anyone was building steels out of the old Bigsby parts. Is that what you're playing here? The tone you're getting is great, whatever it is.
What's the name of your band? I'd love to hear some recordings. |

Thank you!
I'm playing a Clinesmith lap steel. These are brand new to his line. I've also owned one of his D-8 consoles. Todd's an amazing craftsman and person, building the finest dobros on the planet, as well. I play with several bands in NYC, one of which is The Jack Grace Band. We played a few shows with Junior Brown recently. What a trip! This stuff I've recorded is mostly for the love of it, although I'm doing several instructional videos currently which will focus on this type of playing. ![]()

Hi Mike.
As others have said, this is a very nice track. I'm not a big fan of steel guitar but I found your style very easy to listen to. It changes up nicely so it doesn't sound "classic steel guitar" all the time. Nice! Did I imagine it or is there a Woody Woodpecker lick in there at about 2:00 in? Peace, Mark
