Not to hijack or anything but it has always been my contention that Cash made one fatal mistake in the lyric.
Almost all “prison songs” usually have at least just a touch of “sympathy” or “justification” in the story. My papa left when I was young My woman cheated on me I was in debt and needed the money Etc. So, if we’re supposed to feel a little sympathy for the imprisoned author, the original lyric: I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die Should be instead: I shot a man in Reno and I watched him die I will now accept 10% of the posthumous royalties. Thank you. |
