Pointy-Headed "Tele-Style: Guild Made for Roy Buchanan Up for Auction
Pointy-Headed "Tele-Style" Guild Made for Roy Buchanan Up for Auction (from auction website)
As part of Roy Buchanan's 1986 endorsement deal with Guild Guitars, factory manager, Willie Fritscher, created this "pointy-headed Telecaster-style" guitar for Roy. The guitar, model T-200RB (serial #HK100023) is outfitted with jumbo frets, EMG pickups, and Grover tuners per Roy's instruction. The guitar is being offered in an auction at http://www.itsonlyrocknroll.com/cata...pa=&unid=33865. (but the auction notice says it's "not for sale." Humm?) Buchanan was seen playing this very same guitar onstage at Toad's Place in New Haven, Connecticut, in late 1986. While Roy Buchanan had an avid following in the Washington D.C. area where his incendiary style had been receiving critical praise for years, his first taste of national recognition came in 1971 when, at age 32, he was proclaimed in a Rolling Stone article to be one of the three greatest living guitarists; a claim to which none other than Eric Clapton concurred. Among his most popular album releases were 1975's "Live Stock," 1973's "That's What I'm Here For, and 1977's "Loading Zone," are but a few album releases by the soft-spoken, enigmatic musician who showcased a variety of styles steeped in hillbilly, country, early rock n roll, sprituals, and blues. Unfortunately, mega-star status never materialized as his love/hate relationship with the limelight and bouts with drugs and alcohol continued to wreac havoc upon his life until his death by suicide in 1988. Also included in the auction is the original 2-pg. endorsement agreement signed in black felt tip pen by Roy Buchanan that includes the serial number of this and one other guitar. A notarized LOA from Jay Aband, Guild Artist Relations Director, relates the fact that the guitar was returned to Guild in 1987, later given to a guitar tech, and, ultimately, returned to Aband in 1999. The guitar, plush hard case, and extra EMG pickup, are in superb condition. Last edited by TDPRI; June 6th, 2007 at 07:34 PM. |
