Hi I'm new, and I have a '72 Deluxe Question

First off, thank god for a tele forum! I hope to have a long enjoyable stay here!

I've been searching and searching for a couple weeks now for answers, and I've found a few threads here that touch on the subject but don't really answer my question. I love my '72 Deluxe to death, the neck feels right, the body feels right, but something is missing for me. I want to get a pair of humbucker sized P90's in this thing. The information I'm having trouble finding is what I'm going to have to do to make this happen, and this is where you come in.

Will I be able to get away with having a custom pickguard made that is cut for humbuckers and be able to drop in my replacement pickups? What kind of extra routing will need to be done, if any at all? If this is at all doable I'd love to hear everyone's advice on this. I know about changing the pots, and that is something I'm also considering, but I'm pretty set in wanting to have a set of P90's in there and just need some clear info on what the will entail.

Thanks you guys in advance for any info you might have.
